1B Sports Chico, Fishback hammer Spartans Tuesday October 15, 2013 Corning outlasts Orland Daily News photo by Rich Greene The Chico defense stuffs a Red Bluff run. By RICH GREENE DN Staff Writer The Chico Panthers had all the answers Friday night. Chico thrashed Red Bluff 61-20 behind big plays and five Miles Fishback touchdowns as the Panthers seemingly had a response every time the Spartans thought they were going to make a game of it. Fishback scored two rushing touchdowns, caught two more and returned a kickoff for the final touchdown of the game. The Panthers (2-4, 1-1 EAL) raced out to an early 21-0 lead behind a 52-yard Clayton Welch to Fishback strike, a 44-yard Cameron Alfaro run and a 1-yard Fishback endaround into the end zone. The Spartans (3-3, 0-3 EAL) finally woke up in the second quarter as quarterback Greg Dufour took off on a 56yard keep to put Red Bluff at the Chico 5-yard-line. Two plays later Christian Shaffer took in Red Bluff's first touchdown from four yards out and the Spartans cut the lead to 21-6. It didn't take Chico long to answer. On the Panthers next offensive play Welch hooked up with Paolo DiSano for a 53-yard scoring strike to push the lead to 28-6. Red Bluff did it's best to respond as Dufour completed his first pass of the night, a 51-yard hookup with the speedster Austin Torres. Torres crashed into the end zone pylon, but he was marked down at the Chico 2. That proved important as the Panthers once again had an answer. On Red Bluff's next play DiSano picked off an errant Dufour pass stopping a Spartans scoring drive and abruptly the home team's momentum. The Spartans next drive also ended with an interception, this time it was Fishback picking off Dufour. Chico drove the ball down and Alfaro scored from six yards out to give Chico a 35-6 lead. The game turned a bit bizarre on the point after attempt as Red Bluff was called on consecutive plays for roughing the kicker, the second flag also resulted in the ejection of Shaffer. The Spartans star had 11 carries for 52 yards at the time. Red Bluff's coaching staff argued on the first flag Shaffer had been blocked into the Chico kicker and on the second flag he had tipped the football on a block. By Northern Section rule Shaffer would miss Red Bluff's homecoming game next week against Wheatland. The Spartans planned to appeal to suspension. Chico continued answering every Red Bluff attempt in the second half. The Panthers opened up the third quarter with a 5-play drive ending with a Welch to Fishback 36-yard touchdown pass. The Spartans countered with their best drive of the game. Dufour hooked up with Joseph Bosetti on a pair of passes and Daniel Koenig capped it off with a 6-yard rush to make the game Chico 42-13. Once again Chico answered. Following a failed onside kick attempt, Alfaro scampered 48 yards down to the 1-yard-line, where Welch took it in for another Chico score. Second stringers took over the game from there and even when things went wrong for Chico, they went right. Chico's second string offense was forced into a three-andout punt, but the Spartans fumbled the return and Jacob Trnka jumped on the loose ball for the Panthers. Fishback had taken over the quarterback duties by that point and he capped the drive with a 7-yard rushing touchdown to close out the third quarter 55-13. Dufour ended his night with a 31-yard pass to Torres to convert on fourth down. By ANDRE BYIK DN Staff Writer CORNING — After trading punches in the fist half, Corning High's varsity football team surged in the second to knock out the visiting Orland Trojans, 27-13. "I thought we did pretty good in the face of a pretty physical team," Corning coach John Studer said. The Corning Cardinals (5-1, 1-0 Northern Athletic League) enjoyed another big game from running back Chance Nelson (151 yards rushing), who two plays into the game broke for a 77-yard touchdown run. It was his first of two touchdowns on the night. Not to be outdone, the Trojans (3-3, 1-1 Butte View League) countered two plays into their first drive as quarterback James Wiseman ran in a 50-yard touchdown of his own. The Cards and Trojans were locked at 7 apiece not two minutes into the game at Corning High School. Wiseman was playing in place of regular starter, and star, Tyler Batchelder, who was sidelined for the game after suffering symptoms of a concussion. Wiseman filled in nicely in the first half, however, notching 75 yards on six carries and 78 yards through the air on a perfect 4-of-4 passing. Orland gained its first and only lead with 5:14 left to play in the first half as full back Arthur Flynn (26 yards rushing) capped an 11-play drive with a two-yard touchdown run. The Trojans' extra point attempt was no good, but they led Corning 13-7. Then the Cards, who are known for their dedication to the ground game, mixed it up on their subsequent possession. Quarterback Chayce Maday, who had one passing attempt in his last game, completed three passes during a 15-play drive. His last, a 16-yard touchdown strike to Nelson, gave Corning a 14-13 with about 10 seconds left in the third quarter. "We kind of recognized that they had committed so many players up front to try to stop our run that we figured ... one of the things that was there for us was actually throwing the football," Studer said. Corning kicker Jayve Uriostegui was 3-of-4 on extra point attempts on the night. Orland's offense stalled in the second half, converting for just one first down late in the fourth quarter. "They played good defense," Orland coach Mike McDonald said. "They're a good football team. They're well coached and they do a good job." Corning High's David Edson extended the Cards' lead to eight points after running in a four-yard touchdown with 5:13 left to play in the game. Edson nabbed an interception in Orland territory two plays later, enabling Corning to run time off the clock during a nine-play drive that was capped by a one-yard touchdown run by Alex Davila with 14 seconds left to play. Despite the result and being shorthanded because of injuries, McDonald said he liked that his team didn't roll over. Orland next visits Las Plumas on Friday, while Corning travels to Central Valley. --------Sports Editor Andre Byik can be reached at 527-2151, ext. 111 or at sports@redbluffdailynews.com.
