4A Daily News – Tuesday, October 8, 2013 Vitality health & fitness It's never too late to start pumping iron Use variety to motivate kids to eat more veggies By Staff, Relaxnews By Relaxnews After putting a small group of seniors aged 91 to 96 on a strength training program, researchers from the University of Navarre in Spain found that after only 12 weeks, participants showed significant improvement in their balance, reduced their chances of falling, increased walking speed and showed a better capacity for getting out of their chairs. About half of the 24 participants were put on an exercise program that involved strength training and balance exercises two days a week and were measured against the other half, who served as a control group. The results of the study were published in the journal Age of the American Aging Association.__Physical inactivity among the elderly leads to muscle atrophy and decreased cardiovascular and respiratory capacities, reducing their mobility and independence. People lose 30 percent of their muscle strength between the ages of 50 and 70. Experts who authored a similar study out of the University of Michigan in 2011 recommend starting with simple exercises that make use of their own body weight such as squats, modified pushups, lying hip bridges and tai chi, pilates or yoga. Want your child to eat more vegetables? Rather than smothering broccoli in sauce or cutting carrots into fun shapes, a new study suggests a simple solution: just offer them a lot of variety. Researchers from the University of Leeds, the University of Bourgogne, and the University of Copenhagen analyzed some 250 preschool children living in the U.K., Denmark, and France, with mothers completing surveys about how often their children consumed various vegetables and whether or not they liked them, LiveScience reported. Findings, set to appear in the December issue of the journal Appetite, showed that the more frequently a particular veggie was offered to a child, the more he or she was likely to enjoy eating it. Also, mothers reported that children ages six months to one year liked vegetables more than two- and three-year olds. In addition, kids tended to like vegetables that their mothers frequently ate, and their enjoyment of vegetables wasn't related to how they were prepared. The results also reveal some cultural differences in how parents prepare vegetables for their kids: French mothers tend to puree or mash vegetables, while Danish mothers boil them or serve them raw. British mothers were more likely to boil or steam vegetables, or serve them raw. Top vegetable choices among the children in the study were carrots, followed by broccoli, peas, sweet corn, and cucumber. On average, children in the study had been offered an average of 17 of the 36 vegetables included in the survey. A separate study published earlier this year in the journal Psychological Science found that teaching kids about nutrition can boost their vegetable intake. Scientists from Stanford University in the US found that even very young children benefit from a conceptual framework that encourages them to understand why eating a variety of foods is healthy, the researchers said. The result: kids eat more vegetables by choice. Coconut water: Miracle worker or marketing scheme? By Relaxnews Once requiring a trek to the health food store to find, coconut water has now gone global, and you'll find it stocked on grocery store shelves, sold in gyms and yoga studios, passed along to runners during races, all in nifty box containers or cans and touted as nature's perfect sports drink. But is it just a clever marketing scheme or does it really work miracles? A taste for coconut water originated in the tropics, A Retirement Community for the Active Senior Citizens places like Brazil and India, where palm trees thrive and locals have been drinking the fresh clear water from young coconuts for ages, dubbing it "miracle water." Scientists say the benefit is all about potassium (it contains more than a banana) and its naturally occurring electrolytes, along with the added benefits of having no fat or cholesterol and not many calories. Coconut water, primarily from brands Vita Coco EQUAL HOUSING OPPORTUNITY Tehama Estates provides the best living environment available to active seniors in Red Bluff, CA. The Independent in the UK reports coconut water is the fastest growing category in non-alcoholic beverages in the UK. Vita Coco is already in more than 10,000 outlets in the UK, and in around 16,000 across Europe, adds The Independent. Meanwhile, the search for all those fresh, young coconuts is on. O.N.E. coconut water brand ran out of Brazilian coconuts in 2011 and has had to turn to the Philippines and Indonesia for supplies, while other brands are reaching out to Thailand, according to The Independent. But do people really need all that coconut water? While some experts say it does a better job at keeping you hydrated than plain water, most people aren't working out long enough or hard enough to seriously need it, nutritionist Monica Reinagel told National Public Radio in the US. "They really don't need an electrolyte replacement drink," she says, "all they need to rehydrate is water." For hardcore fitness enthusiasts, she adds that the mineral they need most is sodium. Coconut water doesn't have much of that. Men's Fitness magazine spells it out: "If your taste buds just can't take another sip of tap water, choose coconut water. If you're heading to the gym for a light training session or going for a leisurely bike ride, grab coconut water. If you've just wrapped up an intense workout or logged more than an hour of exercise, a traditional sports drink will help replace the sodium you lose through sweat." www.redbluff.mercy.org redbluff.mercy.org Community Diabetes Support Group Monday 10/7 6:30 pm-8:30 pm Columba Room, Coyne Center 530.527.5290 Community Basic Life Support and CPR www.redbluff.mercy.org/classes_and_events Tuesday 10/8 6 pm-10 pm Columba Room, Coyne Center 6:30 pm-8:30 pm www.redbluff.mercy.org/classes_and_events Columba Room, Coyne Center 9 am-3 pm Main Hallway of Hospital Water Birth Class Wednesday 10/9 Alegria Shoe Sale Wednesday 10/9 Weekend Child Birth Class Friday–Saturday 10/18-19 530.736.1326 5 pm-10 pm, 8 am-4 pm www.redbluff.mercy.org/classes_and_events Columba Room, Coyne Center 6 pm-8 pm Imaging Center Breast Assured Wednesday 10/23 888.628.1948 www.redbluff.mercy.org RANDAL S.
