There is plenty of time to plant, until the middle of November, but now is the time to shop to have a good selection of the new arrivals. When planting in October, remember, it can still have some summer weather, so protect young plants from the hot sun by cooling the roots with a light mulch and water well. Anything that does well in early spring will also do well in the fall. Leafy vegetables, such as lettuce, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, collards, carrots, chard and kale will flourish in cool temperatures and may be sweeter after some frosty weather. A second crop of peas will just pop out of the ground and don't forget to plant some ornamental sweat peas in the flower garden near something they can climb. The short ceremony will begin at 1 p.m. with Exchange Club board member Bucky Bowen officiating, and an opening and closing prayer offered up by Pastor Jeff Tollison of the Christ Community Church in Richfield. The podium, sound system, canopies and refreshments will be provided by the Corning Exchange Club, with chairs and other support provided by the cemetery district. The board began a much needed renovation project of the baby section in 2012. By law the cemetery district was prohibited from spending district funds to purchase headstones so Janet Griffin, with the assistance of board member Debbie Perry, volunteered to solicit the public for donations to upgrade the baby section. In addition to needing cosmetic improvement, many of the 200 babies buried in the baby section lacked headstones. Following the renovation, headstones for the first time have News Tip Hotline: 527-2153 FAX: (530) 527-9251 E-mail: clerk@redbluffdailynews.com Daytime: (530) 527-2151 Sports: Ext. 111 Obituaries: Ext. 101 After hours: (530) 527-2153 ______________________ ADVERTISING DEPT.
