2A Daily News – Saturday, September 14, 2013 Community people&events Pierce celebrates 90 Courtesy photo Mildred Pierce celebrated her 90th birthday with family and friends in Red Bluff. She was born Aug. 22, 1923 in Corning. She has three children, David, Carol and Christine, three grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren all living in California. She attributes her good health to hard work and eating right. She climbed Mt. Lassen when she was 70 and again when she was 80, and at 90 it is not out of the question. It seems as though it should be beginning of fall days with the wind blowing vigorously. I need to lay off the listening of the weather report which continues to show us "hot" days. Today I am actually thinking of some virtual sunshine in my life. That sunshine would be in the form of two very important mothers. My Mother being Marjorie Fields Hacker and my husband's mother being Gunil Paulson Barber. These two women were often on a daily basis with me. It was delightful when they sat side by side while I curled their hair. Yes, I do feel a loss of seeing these two women now as they are in heaven. Both of these wonderful mothers were completely devoted to their children, both worked hard and diligently to care for them and to let them know that they were special. My Mother's words still ring in my head. "Don't you ever say that you hate anyone and don't say "can't?" Those daily admonitions have served me well. As with all children the word hate would enter my mind but Mother's words were right along side the thought. It finally occurred to me that I could use the word hate as long as it was directed at an inanimate object, for example: "I hate cod liver oil." was okay. She would give me a big spoon full of it anyway but not reprimand me. If I even hinted of saying that I hated a human being, she would stop me dead in my tracks, not with words but with " the look," mothers reserve for controlling their kid's actions. Perhaps I became enamored with sunshine because I heard my mother sing the words of "You are My Sunshine," so many times. She had a really nice voice but only sang for herself and her children. She was shy and did not like to be in the spotlight. She was fantastic with finances and miraculously came up with what her family needed, and even sometimes with what they wanted. She shopped at second hand stores for wonderful furniture and miraculously came up with what her family needed, and even sometimes with what they wanted. Mother could make a garment out of an old dress and often referred to that process, as cobbling something.
