Seek Out Local Foods Downtown! How Much Do You Know About Downtown? Local, sustainable and organic…buzz words that are all pointing to a trend of finding locally grown foods from trusted farmers. Eco-tourism is hot right now and finding out your food sources and how things are done has become more and more important to families. Along with our great shops, restaurants and entertainment, Downtown Fayetteville also has some great options on where you can pick up your local food items and learn more about our local food sources. Here are a few: See if you know the answer to this trivia question: Name the first "green" building downtown complete with an eco-friendly roof, LED lighting, onsite recycling and permeable parking lots. Hint: It houses a promotional agency along with a few other offices. • Carolina Grown, located at 318 Hay Street, operates a storefront to feature organic and conventionally grown produce, but also specializes in the home delivery of fresh farm products from NC farms, anglers and producers. Yes, you heard right! They deliver to your door. Visit www.carolinagrown.org for more information. Storefront hours are Tuesday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Fridays and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.; and Sundays from noon to 5 p.m. The first person to email the correct answer to jmclaughlin@ci.fay.nc.us will win a fun prize. The winner will be notified by email and will be announced in the next installment of Downtown Developments. • Marquis Market, located at 116 Person Street, offers various products from NC including wine and beer along with limited quantities of produce and milk from local farmers along with a coffee bar and café. Hours of operation are Monday- Saturday 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Sunday 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. and watch for late night programming on Fridays and Saturdays. Check their Facebook for poetry slams and jazz nights. Congratulations to Kelli Cardenas Walsh for submitting the correct answer. Fayetteville State University was founded in 1867 and will soon be celebrating their sesquicentennial (150 years) anniversary. • NEW! The Butcher and The Baker, located at 231 Franklin Street, is a partnership between two mainstays at the Farmer's Market, Butler Angus Farms and Sharpe Artisan Breads. New to downtown as a storefront, they feature locally grown and made foods within a 75 mile radius including farm raised chicken and beef, different cheeses, specialty homemade breads and a large variety of jams, jellies and honey. Hours of operation are Tuesday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Calendar of Events Aug. 30 - Army Ground Forces Band, U.S. Army Forces Command, www.forscom.army.mil/band • The Fayetteville Farmer's Market, located at the Fayetteville Area Transportation and Local History Museum on Wednesdays from 2-6 p.m. and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. They feature vegetables, honey, eggs, meat and more from a 50 mile radius. Bonus is their partnership with the City Market at the Museum, which bring hand crafted artisan wares to the Fayetteville Farmer's Market along with entertainment on 4th Fridays. Aug. 31 - 2nd Annual Warrior Jam Operation Outreach 2013, Patriot Outreach, www.warriorjam.us In addition, check out the menus from downtown restaurants especially when they run specials. Blue Moon Café, Circa 1800, Marquis Market and Sherefe have been known to feature specials with food bought and prepared from the Fayetteville Farmer's Market and area farmers. You can also buy food plants for your own garden at Bell's Seed Store at 230 E. Russell Street and lease a plot at the Fayetteville Community Garden, off Old Wilmington Road. Local food interest is at a high right now. It is no wonder that a permanent Downtown Farmer's Market is one of the top priorities named by you and the community in the 2013 Renaissance Plan update, the new ten year plan for Downtown Fayetteville.
