Young Marines at Lassen National Park Thirteen Young Marines and nine adults from Tehama County Young Marines performed commu- nity service in Lassen Volcanic National Park Saturday, Aug. 22. The group performed a color guard and raised the National Col- ors at the Loomis Museum, Man- zanita Lake campground, located at the North Entrance to the park. The group visited the museum and viewed an informational video, then attended a private ranger talk on volcanology, conducted by Park Ranger Steve Zachary. The Young Marines drove through the Park, stopping for a photo at the Hot Rock, and then for a picnic lunch at Kings Creek pic- nic area. After lunch, the drive con- tinued to the South Entrance area and a visit to the new Kohm Yah- mah-nee Visitor Center. The nearby Sulfur Works viewing area offered examples of steaming hot fumeroles and boiling mud pots. The Young Marines arrived at their main objective at 2 p.m. and climbed to the top of the 10,457- foot Lassen Peak. The trail to the top begins at the peak parking area at an elevation of 8,500 feet. The popular trail is 2.5 miles to the sum- mit, and took about 2 hours. There are many fantastic vistas of the park and surrounding areas from the trail. The summit provides one of the most spectacular views of the Dev- astated Area. This view is the best vantage point to contemplate the power of the 1914-17 eruptions. The lingering rotten-egg smell of hydrogen sulfide near the summit reminds visitors that Lassen is still considered an active, but dormant, volcano. For more information on Young Marines, visit www.young- marines.com.
