T he Maine Alpha Chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon celebrated its 75th Anniversary during UMaine Homecoming on Saturday, October 19, 2024. Maine Alpha hosted several events throughout the day to commemorate this special milestone. Events included an alumni and brotherhood breakfast, the annual alumni meeting, tailgating at the UMaine football game and an alumni gathering to celebrate our storied history. Maine Alpha recognized its first chapter president, Douglas Johnson '48, and presented him with the Distinguished Alumni Award for his lasting impact and dedication to Sigma Phi Epsilon. Maine Alpha welcomed back alumni spanning multiple generations, from recent graduates to brothers from the early 1970s. The day was filled with shared stories, lessons learned and memorable moments that connect all brothers. The legacy of Maine Alpha will continue to thrive thanks to the commitment and support of our brothers, both past and present! Thank you to all who support Maine Alpha. The AVC is pleased to announce its slate of officers for next year, who were elected during the annual alumni meeting. The AVC officers are: • President: Alexander Price '13 • VP Alumni Relations: Adam Genereux '23 • VP Finance: Luke Finnemore '12 • VP Programming: Joey Davis '17 • VP Housing: Eddie Gonnella '17 • VP Fundraising: Matthew Rodrigue '04 Additionally, the AVC is thrilled to welcome six new board members: Alec Gagnon '23, Chad Wright '05, David Hunter '10, Gabriel Labonte '23, Jeremiah Richardson '22 and Patrick Irish '17. If you haven't been to Orono lately, you may not have seen the facelift the chapter house received over the summer! The sloped roof began failing last year, and the AVC diligently selected a reputable roofer to replace the roof and install new metal work. The new roof was overdue, and its replacement ensures our current undergraduate brothers can focus on their campus involvement and academics again without worry. Additionally, long- standing issues with the washers and dryers were resolved and needed improvements to our fire suppression and life-safety systems were performed. Many alumni and undergraduate volunteers on the Housing Committee spent the past year collaborating with local architects, town officials, university representatives and contractors. This collaboration generated ideas and concepts for the future of 375 College Avenue that will pave a path toward addressing all deferred maintenance, bringing the facility up to modern living standards and developing state-of-the-art residential learning community spaces. We are now working with those same advisors to estimate the total costs of the different ideas and concepts. Simultaneously, we have explored, and continue to explore, the feasibility of fundraising and lending to determine what we can afford. Want to help? There is a tremendous amount of work remaining and many decisions to be made. We need the entire Maine Alpha alumni base to contribute their time, talent and resources to turn our ideas and concepts into reality for the undergraduate brothers. If you're ready to learn more and want to help with this effort, please contact Eddie Gonnella at gonnella.eddie@gmail.com; Matt Rodrigue at matt.rodrigue@outlook.com; or Alex Price at aprice@pierceatwood.com.
