W hile Rodney Mondor '02 didn't join a Fraternity in college and was busy with band involvement, his work as a Director of Greek Life connected him with the Association of Fraternity/Sorority Advisors. During an AFA national meeting, he met upstanding Sigma Phi Epsilon alumni who recognized Rodney's personal values and formally invited him to become a Renaissance brother. Professional Development "I actually never stepped into a Fraternity house when I was an undergraduate," Rodney said. His career path started as a Hall Director at Miami University, and for the next six months, he was involved with the orientation program while seeking a graduate program. Rodney attended the University of South Carolina and engaged with the First Year Experience Center while completing his degree in just 12 months. He then returned to Miami as a First Year Advisor and Hall Director, gaining insights into student life. In 1994, Rodney moved back to Maine to work with United Way of Southern Maine. Years later, he joined the University of Southern Maine as the Director of Greek Life and Leadership Development, working to strengthen struggling chapters and promote Greek leadership values. He engaged with organizations like AFA and UIFI, presenting on Greek leadership across various campuses. "I have learned to adapt to change and found myself moving into a variety of positions based on the needs of the administration," Rodney added. "My success: be adaptable and understanding so that you can accomplish much more with the many than with the few." Fraternal Values Rodney's AFA involvement and Sigma Phi Epsilon membership was a result of him learning more about Greek life and seeing immense value in the Balanced Man Program. He assisted with Maine Alpha's rechartering process and developed a plan for chapter growth; that work helped Rodney to maintain connections with many of those brothers today. The Balanced Man philosophy has shaped several aspects of Rodney's life, and he emphasizes the importance of balance in his current position as the University of Southern Maine's Associate VP for Student Affairs and Dean of Students. "I wanted to be a Dean of Students. I wanted to help students better understand college life and take advantage of all the opportunities." In his day-to-day work, Rodney communicates with students to understand their needs and to help them balance personal situations while communicating university policies and responding to emergencies. In his personal life, Rodney is a major advocate for same-sex marriage equality following his first relationship. He has since remarried and enjoys renovating an 1848 farmhouse with his partner. Rodney is also a proud grandfather to his late adopted son's child. "Working with Maine Alpha was a joy to watch young men grow into future leaders."
