The Deke Newsletter GAMMA PHI CHAPTER AT WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY | FALL 2024 T he undergraduate DKE contingent is back and thriving on campus after an enjoyable summer. (Read more in the chapter president's article on page 2.) The next step in restoring 276 High Street should be well underway by the time you receive this newsletter. To keep the integrity of the entire structure intact, the building envelope is being secured, which will help protect the Old Stone House for years to come. This necessary renovation is only made possible by your generous donations to the recent sesquicentennial campaign. We are truly appreciative of your support! Check out the construction update below for more details on this project. To ensure this endeavor is successful, Gamma Phi alumni have the good fortune of having two experts on the KLC Board. First, Rico Peace '69, a retired architect who has designed and managed large building projects like this before. Also, Tom Dwyer '72, who served as George Washington University's director of residential housing and property management and oversaw the renovation and management of university facilities. We are lucky to have Rico and Tom on board, but we would welcome additional assistance. What skills could you bring to Gamma Phi to ensure its success? Give me a call or email to find out. We're always looking for new and fresh ideas! In the Bonds, Gary D. Breitbord '79 President, Kent Literary Club (508) 740-9310 | gbreitbo@aol.com T he Old Stone House isn't what it used to be, but we are working to correct that! Standing vacant for eight years took its toll on the beautiful building. Due to water damage, vandalism, and other factors, the edifice has seen some deterioration; however, there are plans afoot to stop any further degradation. The construction manager, Veilleux Enterprises, and architect, Cheryl Newton, are pulling together plans to install new windows and roofs, repoint the chimneys, and resurface the deck off the living room. The goal is to keep the weather out and to stop any further deterioration of the interior. If all goes as planned, some of this work will be underway early this fall, and optimistically, the house should be buttoned up by the time the first snow flies. This will hold us over until we can resolve our differences with the university's administration regarding the long-term status of the DKE house. Once that gets ironed out, the next phase will be to renovate the interior, construct en-suite living arrangements, and install new electrical, plumbing, and heating systems. Once that work is completed, 276 High Street will once again be the gem it once was and will regain its position as one of the premier living options on the Wesleyan campus! Stay tuned.
