Davala III '76 of Rowayton, Conn., and Vero Beach, Fla., entered the Mystic Circle on July 1 at the age of 71. He was a family man who was devoted to his wife of 39 years and his two children. George is survived by his wife, Georgia; his daughter, Alexandra; his son, George IV (Shannon); his granddaughter; sister; numerous nieces and nephews; and all in Gamma Phi who knew and appreciated his DKE brotherhood. Born in Hallowell, Maine, on December 15, 1952, George was a standout student-athlete at Hall-Dale High School and was on the 1972 Maine State Championship team. He played basketball and baseball at Wesleyan University, where he received his bachelor's degree in political science in 1976. He earned his MBA at The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in 1984. George built a successful finance career in New York before joining Greenwich Capital, where he helped build the firm's mortgage-backed securities business for the next 20 years. An active philanthropist and community organizer, he served on the board of A Better Chance, a non-profit that helps underprivileged young people access quality education. In Vero Beach, he was a supporter and board member at the Boys & Girls Club of Indian River County. Passionate world travelers, George and his wife went from Paris to Patagonia with family and friends, often discovering off-the- beaten-path destinations while hiking and biking. He was a fierce competitor, whether it be playing cards, paddle tennis, pickleball, or his beloved game of golf. George was a long-time Boston sports fan, attending numerous Patriots Super Bowls with his family. "George was the template for what a good man should be," said his friend and longtime Deke brother Dave Thomas '77. "Self- made, very successful, but never lost his compassion for those less fortunate. Competitive as all get out. Dazzling smile and a great sense of humor. His funniest stories were inevitably of the self-deprecating variety. Devoted husband, doting father (and grandfather)—the very best of us. Those who knew him were surely blessed." Alumni News James M. McLean '56 shared that his spouse has long passed but his two children still live fairly near his home in Albany, N.Y. His daughter is 65 and his son is 62. He last visited the house about eight years ago for a Homecoming game. James stays in contact with Horace "Pete" Deacon '56. Email: jmmclean201@verizon.net William C.
