F CUS On Youth Development Students to be Recognized Parks & Recreation Earns "Partner in Prevention" Designation to Protect Children Fayetteville-Cumberland Parks & Recreation has been awarded a "Partner in Prevention" designation, a nationally-recognized public standard to end child sexual abuse (CSA). Teens from the Fayetteville-Cumberland Parks & Recreation (FCPR) Youth Development Program were recognized at the July 22 City Council meeting. The teens, consisting of 17 students representing nine of Cumberland County's high schools, participated in North Carolina's first regional Outdoor Nation Summit (http://outdoornation.org/) in late June. The summit was a two-day conference held on the campus of UNC-Chapel Hill, which included an overnight camping trip to Jordan Lake State Recreation Area. Prior to the summit, age-eligible teens from the Parks & Recreation Counselors In Training (CIT) Program discussed, designed and constructed a model for grant presentations. During the conference, the youth discussed outdoor concepts with young professionals from across the state and later presented their grant proposal to Outdoor Nation, on stage, in the UNC-Chapel Hill student center. FCPR Youth Development teens were awarded the grant in the amount of $1,500 to implement their ideas. The FCPR teens were selected over 15 other organizations to receive the funding for their proposal. For more information about Fayetteville-Cumberland Parks and Recreation, visit their website at: www.fcpr.us. The designation was awarded for Parks & Recreation's commitment to protecting children by training its staff on how to prevent and recognize the signs of and react responsibly to CSA. "Partner in Prevention" was created as a national standard to help parents and caregivers recognize organizations who take CSA prevention seriously by implementing policy and training staff. The training and designation award is provided by Charleston, S.C. based Darkness to Light (D2L). D2L has championed the movement to end CSA since its founding in 2000 and now has education programs in 49 states and 15 foreign countries. D2L's training curriculum points out that CSA is pervasive in a society where it is repressed and not discussed. Thousands of organizations across the U.S. and Canada are now seeking out a dialogue for prevention and they are sending parents and the community a message with the Partner in Prevention distinction. "Fayetteville-Cumberland Parks & Recreation is honored to be awarded a "Partner in Prevention" designation," said James McMillan, recreation division manager. "Child sex abuse is a horrible problem that plagues our society, and our organization is very happy to join in the fight to end this crime against children. Our staff will continue to be trained on how to prevent and recognize the signs of child sex abuse. Darkness to Light is a great organization that Fayetteville-Cumberland Parks & Recreation is proud to partner with."
