On Jan. 1, smoking will be prohibited at the Health Department, Department of Social Services, E. Newton Smith Center/Board of Elections, Historic Courthouse, Hope Mills WIC office, Spring Lake Family Resource Center, County Facility at 109 Bradford Ave. and all eight branches of the Cumberland County Public Library & Information Center. Southpoint Water Line Ready for Connections Cumberland County's water line bringing potable, public water to the Southpoint community in the southwestern part of the county is ready for connections. Property owners along the line were notified in July with the specifics on how to connect. A $12 monthly availability fee will be charged to all owners whose property has access to the county water line, whether they are connecting and using water or not. Once customers connect and begin using water, they will be charged for usage according to the rate schedule. Free Mosquito Insecticide Available The Cumberland County Public Health Department's Environmental Health Division is giving away free mosquito insecticide to county residents while supplies last. The larvicide can be picked up Monday through Friday between 7:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. at the Public Health Center, 1235 Ramsey St. A four-month supply of the insecticide will be given away on a firstcome, first-serve basis. The round-shaped product is placed in water, where it floats. It can be used in lakes, fish ponds, bird baths, flower pots, aquatic gardens, flood-control basins, unused swimming pools and other areas where standing water creates a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Hope Mills Library Will Close Aug. 12-26 The Hope Mills Branch Library will be closed Aug. 12-29 for painting and renovation. Patrons are encouraged to visit any of the Cumberland County Public Library & Information Center's seven other branches while the library is closed. The branch is undergoing changes to increase the number of public computers and enlarge public meeting space.
