Face Shield Offers Protection by JAMES JONES Many years ago I rented a Harley-Davidson in Colorado Springs, Colo. The dealership gave me an open-faced helmet. I put on my Oakley sunglasses and off I went. Later that day, my friend John and I ran into some bug-infested highways. My face was taking a beating. By that point I would have paid full price for a full-face helmet. Later that night, as I was coming back into Colorado Springs, the rain came in and my face was taking a different kind of beating. After that, I always try to wear a fullfaced helmet, but I know that is not everyone's bag. Finding comfortable and creative ways to ride Fast forward to this year and safely can be a challenge. Full face masks can Myrtle Beach's Bike Week. be useful for motorcycle riders in many ways. There, I came across something that made me think, Ahhh! My neighbor Jim and I saw an Ironman-looking face shield. It was the first time I saw something like this. While visiting the vendors, I met with Ernest, who is the CEO of Second Face On LLC, to discuss his product. Second Face On is a pullover mask that fits most open-faced helmets. When I put it on, it reminded me of putting on a baseball catcher's mask. It was constructed of a tough full plastic face shield that goes down around the chin. The mask has a protective eye lens, which is impact resistant and has been tested to meet the Z87.1-2003 standard. This standard is the industrial safety standard for eye protection. The lenses are also anti-fog resistant down to 25 degrees and have a wide field of vision. The mask can be worn with or without glasses. According to Second Face On's website, the mask lenses are made with "crystal clear chromatic transition lens." The mask is vented to provide nice airflow. This mask can be used with or without a helmet. The big eye catcher for me (no pun intended) was the custom paint jobs. They are amazing. The mask is not made to provide protection in the event of a crash, but it is a perfect solution for those that need some kind of protection for your eyes and face when you experience unexpected weather, temperatures and bugs.
