Wednesday, August 11, 2010 – Daily News – 3B Cohabitant complains congress is caustic Red and white equals the blues Dear Annie: I have been dating the woman of my dreams for a year. She treats me incredibly well, and we both are very much in love. Like most adults our age, at first we had sex every week. How- ever, over the past few months, ‘‘Jane’’ has not been willing to make love and has not shown much sign of phys- ical attraction toward me. I confronted her about it, and she said sex is painful. We agreed to try to make things better and not give up on a potential- ly great sex life. Since that conversa- tion, Jane still hasn’t shown any physical inter- est. I have tried setting the right atmosphere, and I always tell her how beau- tiful and sexy she is. I would never want to put her through anything she doesn’t enjoy, but I truly want a good sex life with the woman I love and believe it can be achieved. Should I confront her again, or do you have any other suggestions? — Loving Boyfriend Dear Boyfriend: The right atmosphere and nice compliments are not going to solve Jane’s problem. She needs to see her gynecologist and explain that she is suffer- ing from painful inter- course (dyspareunia). There can be a variety of Annie’s Mailbox by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar causes, both physical and psychological, and an array of treatments. But it is important that Jane talk to some- one knowledge- able. Ask Jane if she would like you to accompany her so you can learn how to be supportive and helpful. She sounds worth it. Dear Annie: I am (God help me) think- ing about having my 80- year-old mother move in with me. In some ways, it would benefit both of us. Her health is deteriorat- ing, she is on a small fixed income, and my own post- divorce finances are shaky. However, Mom is highly controlling and critical and tends to be spiteful when she doesn’t get her way. I have serious concerns about being able to main- tain my privacy and my identity should she come to live with me. There is a limit to the number of nasty remarks I am will- ing to tolerate, and just because she disapproves of my career, my music preferences, my friends, etc., doesn’t mean I’m going to change my ways. Can you give me some advice on how to address these issues in advance? Is there a Bill of Rights for when parents move in? — Trying To Do My Duty Dear Trying: Not that we know of. We recom- mend you and your moth- er have a nice long talk before she moves in. Explain that living togeth- er will require compro- mises from both of you, and it’s best to iron out some of the problem areas in advance. She should not expect you to change your lifestyle in order to please her, and you must allow her to maintain her independence. Learn to turn a deaf ear to some of her criticisms, and say ‘‘no’’ when she makes unreasonable demands. If you are consistently polite but firm about it, she will eventually adjust — and so will you. Dear Annie: ‘‘Frus- trated Bride-to-Be’’ said she is getting married soon and wants her guests to make donations to char- ity instead of giving wed- ding gifts, but her friends and relatives don’t seem to be complying. I recommend she regis- ter at her local retailers for only sensible everyday items like towels, sheets, dishes, cups, pot and pans. After the wedding, she can take the unwrapped gifts to her local women’s shelter or the charity of her choice. These things would bring tremendous joy to someone in need. This solution gets her the outcome she wants with- out forcing her guests to stop giving presents. And, as you stated, she should be sure to send thank-you notes. — Tris Dear Tris: A lovely solution! Thanks for sug- gesting it. FEATURES DEAR DR. GOTT: I’m a 56- year-old female. For the past 1-1/2 years or so, I have had red streaks in the whites of my eyes. About six months ago, I went to an eye doc- tor who said the streaks were just “normal aging.” My vision is fine, but no matter how much rest I get, they’ve continued to worsen. My eyes always look as if I’m sick or have been on a bender. I’ve searched the Internet and Dr. Peter Gott can’t find anything that fits this problem. Can you tell me what I have and how to cure it? DEAR READER: Red eyes occur when small vessels on the surface of the eye become congested and engorged with blood. The condition is commonly related to an oxygen insufficiency. A vitamin B deficiency, specifically B2 and B6, eye strain, sun exposure, overuse of contact lenses, cosmetics, fatigue, improper diet, blood thinners and allergies are a few of the more common causes. I would feel better if you were to have an ophthalmologist rule out conjunctivitis (pinkeye), uveitis, corneal ulcers, herpes simplex and other medical conditions so you can be assured there is no underlying reason for the streaks. If you have been unsuccessful in treat- ing your condition, modify your diet to avoid margarine and saturated fats, table and refined salt, hard cheeses and chlori- nated water. Add spinach, olive oil, water and fresh fruits, such as blueberries, black- berries and cherries. Use over-the-counter eyedrops for relief. Apply cool or warm compresses several times a day when pos- sible throughout the day and, if appropri- ate, temporarily discontinue using makeup. Perhaps the dietary and external modifica- tions will improve things. DEAR DR. GOTT: I would like infor- mation concerning molluscum contagio- sum. My 8-year-old daughter started with a spot on her wrist. Her pediatrician told me that it would go away on its own. Howev- er, it has been more than a year and it has- n’t disappeared yet. There are also other spots that have shown up on various locations of her body. Now my 10-year-old son has developed it, with patches on his legs. I’ve debated taking both chil- dren to a dermatologist because I learned it could be a painful process to take that route. I’ve also heard I could use a silver cream. Have you heard of success with this treatment? DEAR READER: Molloscum contagiosum is a viral infection of the skin that can affect people of any age; however, it is more prevalent in children. It presents with flesh- to pearl-colored lesions any- where on the body (except for the palms of the hands and soles of the feet) and can last up to a year in people with a normal immune system. Unfortunately, the sys- tems of children are not completely devel- oped, thus making them more susceptible than adults. It is common for people in the same family to touch toys and towels, answer the telephone, and turn doorknobs to spread this contagious disorder through direct contact. Hand washing and cleanliness are vital. Diagnosis is commonly made through visual contact. Should questions arise, scrapings can always be accomplished for examination under a microscope. In many instances, treatment isn’t nec- essary. When recommended or preferred, the most common methods include cryotherapy, laser and curettage — all very dramatic for a child to undergo. There are topical creams a pediatrician might recom- mend, such as podophyllotoxin or trichloroacetic acid or the silver you refer to, that should be more to your liking. Dr. Peter H.
