The program not only accept- ed the challenge, but met it head on and excelled at doing so. By the end of the regular sea- son, John Studer had guided the Cardinals to an 8-2 record and a first round home playoff game in his first year as head coach. While the Cardinals fell to Foothill 23-6 in the first round they had already made their statement — Corning can be as much a power in D-1 as they were in Division 2. This year the off-field news swung in Corning’s favor. Realignment has moved Lassen, Corning’s biggest road- block to a league title, out of the Northern Athletic League. Studer said Lassen’s move helps his team when it comes to wins and losses, but the game will be missed on Corning’s yearly schedule. “It was fun to play against them,” Studer said, adding both programs had built up a level of mutual respect for each other. Both of Corning’s regular sea- son losses in 2009 came against eventual section champions. Lassen went on to win the D-2 championship and Enterprise, who beat the Cardinals 10-7 in Week 1 won the D-1 trophy. The 10 points Enterprise scored during the game, was the fewest they were held to all sea- son. Wednesday August 11, 2010 Cardinals look to keep rolling Daily News photo by Rich Greene Coach John Studer instructs a blocking drill,Tuesday, at the Corning Cardinals football practice. Yes, Corning had a strong team last year, helped by a senior class with the likes of Andres Marquez, Fontaine Richardson, Daniel Mahutga, Kevin Lan- davazo, Nick Johnson and Zane Petty. However, the Cardinals didn’t lose all of their talent to gradua- tion. They bring back what might be one of the best returning 1-2 running combinations in the sec- tion with Cameron Nye and Tyler McIntyre. Nye racked up 974 yards and 13 touchdowns on the ground and caught two more scores to go along with 70 tackles. McIntyre led the team with 93 tackles and rushed for 566 yards and six touchdowns. With Marquez departing at quarterback, Corning will turn to junior Ryan Holland to run the Wing-T. Holland is athletic and his speed should suit the run-orient- ed offense. Studer said the goal for the first few weeks of practice will be challenging his players’ knowledge level and for the coaches to adjust the depth chart to make sure the Cardinals are two-deep at every position. Corning opens with Las Plumas and Orland, before head- ing to Red Bluff for the Tehama Swimmers wrap summer season County Shootout. Held down in playoff points last season, because the sched- ule was made before the move to D-1, the Cardinals added Shasta to the 2010 slate. That home game is followed by a road trip to Oroville, a home game with West Valley and road trips to Anderson and Yreka. The Cardinals close the schedule by hosting Central Val- ley and travelling to Winters.
