2B Daily News – Tuesday, July 16, 2013 LITTLE LEAGUE 9-10 BASEBALL ALL-STARS Red Bluff wins first 2 in sections Special to the DN K The Red Bluff 9-10 division All-Stars baseball team won its first two games in its section tournament over the weekend in Chico. Game 1: Saturday - Red Bluff 16, Marysville 0. The 9-10 year old Red Bluff All-Stars got off to a great start in its section tournament, held in Chico. On the mound, Blake Tweedt, Bryce Tweedt and Kurtis Rodriguez all combined to hold Marysville to a no-hitter shutout. The game cut short because of the10-run mercy rule. Chico Eastside Little League LIONS (Continued from page 1B) The senior signal-caller looked as familiar as one would expect as the North, coached by his father and Hornets coach Darren Trueblood, ran the Enterprise shotgun spread offense efficiently with the assistance of three teammates, all of them plenty familiar with the playbook. "That's not an excuse," said Chico's Burak Karatekeli of the South's setback. Still, the North was crisp in its attack when it needed to be, and no one looked as comfortable Saturday as Trueblood. He completed 9 of 13 passes for 186 yards and one touchdown, a 49-yard screen pass to fellow Hornet Travis Hall. It didn't hurt that Trueblood had so much help, either. Four Hornets tied Paradise for the most players in the game Saturday. Brad Woods, the Enterprise tailback who was the Northern Section's offensive most valuable player last season, ran for 90 yards on 10 carries and scored on a 4-yard touchdown run that made it 20-0 in favor of the North with 9:24 left in the second quarter. Travis Hall, the Hornets' dynamic tight end, caught three passes for 92 yards, including a screen pass from Trueblood and turned it into a 49-yard score. That touchdown was a one-play drive with 5:40 left in the third quarter and left the North ahead 32-0. Hall also picked off an Elkins pass with 12:29 left in the second quarter and caught a 2-point conversion from Kody Conner on a trick play after Woods' TD run. Later in the period, Conner, a Central Valley standout, intercepted Elkins at the North 6 with less than 2 minutes in the first half. A 40-yard run from Woods helped set up Rosas' big kick. The fourth Hornet, Dallas Collins, also had his moments, including a sack that shortcircuited one of the few scoring threats the South managed. RAYS (Continued from page 1B) 16) won third place overall in their divisions. Red Bluff Triton Invitational is a fun meet for our team. It is a well run meet, plus our swimmers enjoy the cross-county competition." Five Corning Manta Rays will be competing at the Junior Olympics next weekend: Tayler Snow, Hannah Pritchard, James Stokes, Zachary Pritchard, and Logan Touvell. The following weekend the team will compete in Quincy. Results: Girls: Taylor Dowden (7-8)50 freestyle 1:04.91 14th place. Breanna Terry (7-8)50 breaststroke 1:06.22 4th place, 25 freestyle 26.80 11th place. Breanna had two best ever times. Lyric Wigno, 5, attended her first meet ever and earned a highpoint win. Her best time was in the 25 yard freestyle (45.69 seconds). Ethan Williams, 8, was separated from second place by 1 point. His best finish was the 100 yard scored first in the bottom of the third inning. The fourth inning, however, would be the beginning of a new game. Luke Arvig walked and stole second on a passed ball. Garrett Freeman singled, moving Arvig to third. Codee Hill followed, laying down a bunt single, which loaded the bases for Red Bluff. Two batters later, with two outs, Logan Houchins drew a walk, walking in Red Bluff's first run of the game. Bryce Tweedt took the plate and singled, bringing home Freeman. Kurtis Rodriguez also singled, scoring both Hill and Houchins and bringing Red Bluff's runs to 4. "I think we were a little faster than them on the line of scrimmage," Rosas said. The North — helped by Howard, a twoway standout the past two years for Orland, particularly at defensive end — kept the heat on the South. "They had a great defensive line," said South starting center Cody Pol of Las Plumas. "They kept bringing lots of pressure." Pol was one of three all-stars playing on their home stadium, along with fellow Thunderbird and defensive lineman Jonathan Vang and Oroville athlete Justin York. The visitors, though, made themselves right at home. Burney's Robert Wall, on a 9yard run, and then Shasta's Avery Holley, on a 1-yard plunge, scored the North's first touchdowns and gave the visitors a 14-0 lead in the first quarter. The South's best chance to make it a game came early. After stuffing the North on a three-and-out on the game's opening possession, the ensuing punt never happened. The snap was too high for Rosas and gave the South the ball at the North's 17. Paradise quarterback Tom Hays ran 9 yards on first down to the North 8. But the visiting defense, buoyed by another area standout — Howard, a North defensive captain who moved inside to start at tackle — held the South for no gain on the next two plays. The South bypassed the short fieldgoal attempt and instead went for a first down on fourth and 1. A bad exchange ended any chance. "After we stopped them there, that's when the game started to turn to our side," said Rosas, who saw time at defensive end, and, like Howard, kept the South from gaining a foothold at the line of scrimmage. The North responded with a 93-yard drive that ended with Wall's TD run. If that sequence doesn't happen, "maybe it's a different story," South coach Jim Ward said. The numbers weren't nearly as positive Chico Eastside was able to score a run in the bottom of the fourth, but Red Bluff would answer with a run in the top of the fifth. Arvig took a base on a Chico error and scored on Jakob Fregoso's bunt single. In the bottom of the 5th inning, Arvig threw a quick 1-2-3 to give Red Bluff one more shot at scoring. Bryce Tweedt singled and was in scoring position for his brother, Blake Tweedt, when Blake hit a 2-run homer, bringing the score to 7-2. Chico Eastside produced one last run in the bottom of the sixth, but it was not enough to prevent Red Bluff from continuing on in the winner's bracket of the Section 2 All Star Tournament. Red Bluff played again Mon- for the South. Until quarterback Paradise's Hays scrambled twice for runs of 14 and 25 yards at the 5-minute mark of the third quarter, the South had negative yards rushing. "We came out flat, and they didn't," said Hays, whose brother Jon was the game's MVP when the South last won in 2008. The younger Hays finished 4 of 14 passing for 39 yards, but he still moved the ball at times in other ways. He ran for 48 yards on three carries, and he caught three passes for 65 yards while Elkins was in at quarterback. Hays' last catch, a 25-yarder, set up Romero's score. At times, the South seemed to be able to move the ball with Hays split out as the 6foot-4 athlete and the 6-5 Karatekeli of Chico were a difficult matchup in tandem. That freed things up for one of them or Trevon Reid, Karatekeli's teammate at Chico. But with a nonexistent run game from the South, the visitors were able to stymie any threat before the South could piece together any semblance of consistent movement. "We didn't have that bruising back," said Ward, who guided Willows to consecutive section championships in Division III the past two seasons, both times on the road. Elkins threw for 166 yards on 11-of-18 passing but also threw two interceptions. Chico's Reid caught five passes for 48 yards and his Panthers' teammate Karatekeli had two catches for 68 yards. Hays had three Paradise teammates with him on the South side in Johnny Porter, Izzy Welch and Keefer Fulton. Porter saw time at wideout and in the secondary. Welch, a standout linebacker as a Bobcat, fulfilled the same role for the South. Fulton was a late addition to the team after Durham's Logan Smith was injured Monday in practice. Fulton sacked Trueblood for a loss of 9 yards with about 3:44 left in the first quarter. But the North responded with a Trueblood-to-Conner connection for a first down. Cooper Janusevskis, a Foothill standout, caught six passes for 82 yards for the North. day night at the Chico Eastside Little League park. But the most memorable moment belonged to Rosas, who also booted a number of touchbacks, even by splitting the uprights. "Everything was perfect," Rosas said of the 52-yard kick as he enjoyed the victory in his final game before moving on to Southern Oregon, where he'll kick for its football team. "The hold, the snap. Everything was good." Rosas attempted a 57-yarder in the third quarter, but that try was a little right and possibly a tad short. The Trojan said his best was a 55-yarder kicked during his junior season. ——— North 32, South 7 North 14 11 7 0 — 32 South 0 0 0 7 — 7 First Quarter N — Wall 9 run (Rosas kick), 7:38 N — Holley 1 run (Rosas kick), 3:15 Second Quarter N — Woods 4 run (T.
