2A Daily News – Tuesday, July 16, 2013 Community people&events Common Core topic of upcoming meetings What will your children or grandchildren learn when they go back to school after the summer break? Students in 45 states will be educated under the new Common Core State Standards. Want to know more? There will be two public meetings about the new standards at 6 p.m. Thursdays, July 18 and July 25 at the Corning Senior Center 1015 4th Ave. Diane Bailey, assistant superintendent of the Corning Union Elementary School District, will be the guest speaker at this meeting. The new standards are for grades k-12. Proponents of CCSS say that the new standards are more rigorous, opponents say that isn't true. Many school districts are implementing the standards without any public knowledge or comment. The Corning Patriots are providing a venue for the public; to learn about the standards that will now be a very big part of our children and grandchildren's lives. The meeting will provide the proponents time to speak to the public. On July 25 the opponents will have their turn to give their side of the issue. The community is invited to come out and hear what children will be taught — what is considered by our government to be the new accepted standards of education. Will our future generations be bright shining stars? Come listen, ask questions, and form your own opinions. Sitting in the movies, you can escape reality. You can live vicariously through the characters on the screen and escape from whatever it is that is weighing you down. There are many forms of escape that allow us to disconnect from who we are and perhaps enhance our perceptions of who we want to be or what we want in our lives. Escapism can be a healthy way to set aside some of your worries, insecurities, and bolster your imagination and hopes for your future, but be careful not to replace intimacy with the illusions of escape. Our lives are a jumbled mixture of things we like, things we don't and things that ebb and flow. If we aren't careful, we can fool ourselves into thinking that our lives are inadequate as compared to characters in a book, movie or television show. Our self images and the thoughts we have about others can be influenced by unrealistic images in magazines, videos and music. The illusions of what we spend our time escaping in can undermine our opportunity to truly connect and engage with the people we have direct access to.
