Kings sign Carl Landry SACRAMENTO (AP) — The Sacramento Kings have officially announced the signing of free agent Carl Landry. Landry signed his fouryear, $26 million deal Monday. He is the first free agent to sign under new owner Vivek Ranadive, who had held a minority stake in the Golden State Warriors — where Landry played last season — until buying the Kings in May. Landry played parts of the 2009-10 and 2010-11 seasons for Sacramento. The 29-year-old power forward averaged 10.8 points and six rebounds in 23.2 minutes off the bench to help the Warriors reach the second round of the playoffs last season. He opted out of the final year of his two-year, $8 million deal with Golden State last month to become a free agent. AMERICAN LEGION BASEBALL | Redding 12, Red Bluff 2 Tigers rout Bulls for district title By RICH GREENE DN Staff Writer The Redding Tigers beat the Red Bluff Bulls 12-2 in a mercy shortened 8-inning game Friday night to complete a sweep of the American Legion Baseball District 2 championship series. Redding outlasted Red Bluff in the opening game of the bestof-three series Thursday night with a 5-3 in 11 innings. The Tigers advance to the Area Tournament in Chico. Dean McMurtry pitched the entire game for Redding, holding the Bulls off the scoreboard until the eighth inning, when Carson Ellis reached second base to start the inning off an errant throw. He took third on a passed ball and then scored on a Mitch Fox sacrifice fly. Evan Sinclair and Cody Jamerson followed with consecutive singles. Sinclair would eventually score on a fielder's choice off the bat of Chuy Ramirez. That made the game 7-2, but any life the Bulls seemed to gain disappeared in the bottom half of the inning. Taylor Angley Holman dou- bled off reliever Will Macdonald to start the inning. Then Kenneth Fudge tripled him. Fudge finished the game 2 for 3, with two walks and a pair of RBIs. Carsen Parks drove in Fudge with an RBI single to chase Macdonald from the game, but Fox fared no better for the Bulls on the bump. Dylan Mumford singled and Kodiak O'Ravez worked a walk to load the bases. Austin Coleman and Austin LaBue drove in runs to make it 11-2. SWIMMING Tritons win 1st home meet in years Special to the DN Red Bluff High School was teeming by pop-up shade tents and over 230 swimmers to host Red Bluff Tritons 54th annual Invitational Swim Meet. Swimmers from Red Bluff, Corning, Anderson, Weaverville, Redding, Scott Valley, and Yreka attended. The Tritons' 63 swimmers earned themselves a first-place finish against the eight teams, beating out Anderson Aquagators by 106 points. Corning earned third. Swimmers earn points for finishing from first through sixth place for each race they participate in. These points are accumulated for the swimmer and the same number of points are tacked onto the team's points. Twelve Triton athletes took home highpoint awards. Four Tritons earned first-place trophies in their age group division. Preston Beeman, 6 years old, earned 56 points by winning all eight of his races. He also broke a pool record for his 25 yard breaststroke in 30.95 seconds. Joslyn Shults, 6, earned 42 points by winning six races. The 49ers announced the deal Monday. Schmidt will compete against punter Andy Lee and kicker Phil Dawson, likely serving as the backup and providing breaks for each during training camp. Schmidt finished his career at UC Davis with 235 punts for 9,664 yards and a school-record 41.1 gross punting average. He also served as the team's kickoff specialist, recording 34 touchbacks in 62 attempts. The Bakersfield native surpassed the previous single-season UC Davis record of 42.3 gross punting average with a 44.5 average to earn first team All-Big Sky Conference last year. He also was selected to the second team All-Great West Conference following his sophomore and junior seasons. Thomas Olson walked to reload the bases and Jessie Lee finished the game by putting a ball in play that drove home the mercy-inducing 10-run rule. The Tigers had built up their 7-0 load on Bulls starter Danny Vietti and some sloppy Red Bluff defense. Meanwhile the Bulls, outside of a fourth inning triple by Tyler Boone, had trouble producing threats against McMurtry until the final inning. ——— "The Red Bluff meet brings our season just over the halfway point and our swimmers swam strong this weekend. A few high notes for our swimmers is that two swimmers, Hannah Pritchard and Makaylee Lindsey each won every event that they swam in. Hannah Pritchard (girls 9-10) and Makaylee Lindsey (girls 13-14) won their age divisions along with Kara Beckwith (girls 11-12). Orland High's Aldrick Rosas crushed a 52-yard field goal as time expired in the first half. Of course, Rosas — who had plenty of distance on his kick, a record for the all-star game — was one of four area participants on the North side. It was that kind of night for the South as the North cruised to a 32-7 victory late Saturday night at Harrison Stadium in front of an estimated 2,500 fans. The victory was the North's fifth straight in the series, tying the longest win streak by either side in the annual game for graduated high school seniors from the Oregon border to Yuba City with proceeds going to Camp McCumber, a camp for diabetic children. Rosas, along with fellow Trojan Ben Howard, Hamilton's Brad Hall and Corning's Nathan Fultz all helped the North walk off with yet another convincing victory over their South counterparts. Last year's game at Anderson's Bob Reid Stadium ended with a running clock in the fourth quarter of a 56-21 North victory. Saturday's game was much of the same, including the running clock, as the North led 32-0 going into the final quarter after leading 25-0 at halftime. The South avoided the shutout when Portola's Oscar Romero hauled in a 3-yard touchdown reception from Yuba City quarterback Taylor Elkins on a roll-out pass to the right with 3:10 left in the game. Romero added the extra point, but it was far too little and much too late for the South. By that time, the Ray Francis award for most valuable player had been basically decided with Enterprise quarterback Zack Trueblood receiving the honors.
