(AP) — Former NFL star Chad Johnson was sentenced Monday to 30 days in jail for a probation violation in a domestic violence case by a judge who angrily rejected a no-jail plea deal after Johnson playfully slapped his attorney on the backside in court. Johnson, known as Chad Ochocinco for his jersey number in Spanish during his playing days, had reached a deal with prosecutors calling for community service and counseling instead of jail. Broward County Circuit Judge Kathleen McHugh said she would tack on an additional three months' probation because Johnson had failed to meet with his probation officer during three previous months. It was all set until Johnson, when asked by McHugh if he was satisfied with his lawyer Adam Swickle, gave the attorney a light swat on the rear — as football players routinely do to each other on the field. The courtroom erupted in laughter and at that McHugh said she wouldn't accept the deal. ''I don't know that you're taking this whole thing seriously. I just saw you slap your attorney on the backside. Is there something funny about this?'' McHugh said, slapping the plea deal document down on her desk. ''The whole courtroom was laughing. I'm not going to accept these plea negotiations. This isn't a joke.'' Johnson, 35, tried to apologize and insisted he meant no disrespect. Johnson was on probation after pleading no contest to head-butting his then-wife, TV reality star Evelyn Lozada, during an altercation last August. She quickly filed for divorce after barely a month of marriage and Johnson, a six-time Pro Bowl wide receiver, was immediately released by the Miami Dolphins. He didn't play at all last season. ''This is your courtroom. I have no intent to make this a joke. It's not funny,'' Johnson told the judge ''My life is in a shambles right now and I try my best to laugh and keep a smile on my face.'' But McHugh, who could have given Johnson up to a year in jail, was not moved. ''It's not the first time he's behaved that way in my courtroom,'' she said. Johnson then was handcuffed and hauled away to jail. Tebow to sign with Patriots (AP) — Tim Tebow may still have a future in the NFL after all. The New England Patriots seem to think so and plan to sign him on Tuesday if he passes a physical. He won't be a starting quarterback, of course, with Tom Brady on hand in Foxborough. But certainly he's an intriguing reclamation project — yet another chance for coach Bill Belichick to torture the New York Jets, who failed to find a role for Tebow last season. And that could make for quite a Boston Tea-bow Party. A person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press on Monday that Tebow will join the Patriots' minicamp on Tuesday and sign with the team, pending the medical exam. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because no official announcement had been made. Even when Tebow signs, there is no guarantee he will play for the Patriots. ESPN first reported that Tebow would sign with New England. Former Broncos general manager Ted Sundquist sees the logic in the move. ''If you can find a club that's mature enough to handle it as an organization, then you're going to find the right spot for him,'' Sundquist said. ''What I mean by that is all the media mania and that sort of thing. The club says, 'Look, this is the reason we're bringing him on. We feel he can bring X, Y, Z and A, B, C to the table.' Explain it to Tim, explain it to the media, explain it to your fan base and explain it to your organization.'' That description seems to fit New England perfectly. One of the NFL's most polarizing players, Tebow spent a lost season in 2012 with the New York Jets, playing sparingly behind struggling starter Mark Sanchez. Some fans thought he got a raw deal and deserved more of a chance; others thought he lacked the skills to be a pro quarterback. He was released in April with barely a shrug — hardly the ending most Jets fans envisioned considering his super-hyped welcome to the Big Apple. Tebow won two national titles at Florida and was a first-round draft pick in See TEBOW, page 2B Athletics getting on a nice roll OAKLAND (AP) — Third baseman Josh Donaldson sees plenty of similarities between this Oakland team and the one that stunned the Texas Rangers on the season's final day last fall. Going on a year after the Athletics made their remarkable turnaround and their push to a surprising AL West title, the defending division champions are on a roll again. ''It's contagious, winning, you know? It's about confidence,'' closer Grant Balfour said. ''You see a guy get a big hit and the next guy comes up and does his job. You're going to have your battles some nights, but that little thing, whatever it is to get over the edge and win that ballgame, is what we're doing right now. It's been big.'' The A's have had their share of struggles in the first half, too, not so different from all of those Oakland teams of the past that took off after the All-Star break. While Oakland (38-27) dropped the final two games of its seven-game road trip in Chicago, the A's have won seven of 10 and 18 of 23. They entered Monday's off day a half-game back in the AL West race behind Texas (37-25). Starting Tuesday night, the A's will get another tough home test when the New York Yankees visit the Coliseum for a three-game series. Less than three weeks ago, things didn't look so good. The A's returned from a rough 3-7 road trip and lost for the eighth time in 10 games in a 3-1 home defeat to the Rangers on May 22. Oakland then rattled off a five-game winning streak that featured a three-game sweep at Houston and won the first three in a four-game Bay Bridge Series against the 2012 World Series champion San Francisco Giants. Significant progress by the starting pitchers has been a big part of the recent run. ''There's no doubt that's been a key for us,'' manager Bob Melvin said. ''Earlier in the season, the offense was ruling the day, we were scoring a lot of runs and making up for the ERA as a team we're not used to looking at. All of a sudden you come into closer games and we're giving up some runs earlier in the game and it's a little different story.'' In those tight games, Oakland is showing some of the late-game magic that helped define last year's special season, when the A's became the first team in major league history to win a division or pennant after trailing by five games with less than 10 to play. Tied NBA Finals shift to San Antonio Miller's shots sure-fire boost SAN ANTONIO (AP) — Moments after getting his championship ring on the night this NBA season opened last October, Mike Miller walked to midcourt, grabbed a microphone and addressed the delirious crowd. ''The journey that starts tonight is going to be even more challenging,'' Miller said. At the time, Miller had no idea how prophetic those words would seem. Stuck on the Miami Heat bench for much of the year, laughing on the outside as little more than a coping mechanism designed to hide his frustration, Miller is getting plenty of time again in these NBA Finals. A star of last year's title series — he made his first seven 3point tries of Game 5, the clinching win against Oklahoma City — Miller is relishing the chance to contribute to perhaps a second straight championship. ''It's definitely been a good experience, but we've got a lot of basketball left,'' Miller said. SAN ANTONIO (AP) — Somehow, some way, the San Antonio Spurs seem to have discovered a secret that every team in the league desperately searched for all season long. They have figured out a way to slow down LeBron James. Whether it's Kawhi Leonard's incredible wingspan, Danny Green's dogged determination or a stash of kryptonite that Tim Duncan happened upon while taking a walk along the banks of the San Antonio River, it's working. And yet the Spurs return home for Game 3 of the NBA Finals on Tuesday night perhaps feeling lucky to have earned a split in Miami. James is averaging a pedestrian 17.5 points and has posted his two lowest point totals in the postseason during the finals. One would think that's a recipe for a commanding 2-0 series lead. But San Antonio needed an incredible shot from Tony Parker with 5.2 seconds to play in Game 1 to See SPURS, page 2B
