Lightning sparks multiple fires Hot time By JULIE ZEEB DN Staff Writer Saturday's high temperatures hitting 111 degrees transitioned into cool, cloudy weather Monday morning with dry lightning hitting Tehama County. At least five small vegetation fires and a structure fire ignited in Tehama County Monday morning, including a pumphouse and another structure fire. The fires, which began about the time lightning passed through the area, are being considered lightning-caused, said CalFire Public Information Officer Kevin Colburn. The structure fire was reported about 10:20 a.m. at a See FIRES, page 7A Dept. of Ed extends lease on former college By RICH GREENE DN Staff Writer Daily News photo by Andre Byik By ANDRE BYIK DN Sports Editor Part of the fun of eating crayfish is showing off the technique to do so, Charli Hand says. With a twist, a pinch a bite and a slurp, Hand eats and discards one of the seven tons of crayfish that was shipped in from Louisiana for Red Bluff's fourth annual Crawdad Festival, which took place Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the Tehama District Fairground. Hand and her husband Ralph, who are with R-Wild Horse Ranch, started the Cajun-themed festival in Isleton in 1986. The couple came to Red Bluff in 2005, but it wasn't until 2010 that the Red Bluff Crawdad Festival was spawned. A crush of crayfishloving festival-goers could be seen Saturday taking in music and taking cover during a day that reached 111 degrees. "When you're eating crawdads, you're going to get hot on the inside," Charli Hand said, "and the outside is going to feel Man shot in Orland Cops search for men in burgundy SUV The Glenn County Sheriff's Office is investigating the attempted murder of 66-year-old Larry Dean Embrey of Orland. A 9-1-1 call was received from the victim at 10:08 p.m. Saturday and he told the emergency dispatcher he had been shot in the chest by an unknown Hispanic male. Deputies and medical personnel were dispatched to the home on County Road 21. Deputies found Embry in his kitchen bleeding from the upper chest. Embrey did not know the man who stated he had vehicle problems and wanted a ride. Embrey invited the man inside his home, telling him he was going to get his truck keys. The man was given a ride down the road for a short distance near the intersections of County Roads 21 and N. A burgundy colored SUV was there with another man seated on the driver's side. The man who Embrey had given a ride to exited Embrey's pickup and the he lost sight of him. Embrey said he lowered his vehicle's window and asked whether everything was all right. No one answered. Embrey said he exited his vehicle and approached the SUV on foot. As Embrey got next to the driver's side of See ORLAND, page 7A just fine." Doug Harris, of Redding, carried a plate of food that included alligator on a stick under an overhang. Harris and his daughter, Micaela, 7, were ready for the occasion Saturday. They donned colorful beadednecklaces from themed parades they attended in New Orleans. Harris said it was his first time attending Red Bluff's festival. "We got good food … and good music," Harris said. "Hey, we're a long ways away. This is good. But it's not New Orleans." This year, the Red Bluff-Tehama County Chamber of Commerce took the event over. Charli Hand said the R-Wild Horse Ranch couldn't devote the resources the chamber could, as stakeholders in the ranch are located across the country. But the ranch still played a role at the event as it boiled box after box of crayfish that filed box after box at the concession stand. The Tehama County Department of Education will continue to lease the sight of the former Shasta College Red Bluff campus from the city of Red Bluff after a deal to purchase the land outright fell through. City staff had begun negations a year ago to sell the Palm Avenue site to the department, which was already leasing and utilizing its modular buildings. However that deal fell apart when site analysis and soil testing revealed the presence of lead on the property, most likely attributed to a former water tower and pipes at the location. While contamination does not pose a threat, the state will not authorize the department to purchase the land without a remediation process. The Department of Education decided that would be cost-prohibitive and instead approached the city to extend a new long-term lease. The City Council authorized a 10-year lease with the department at its June 4 meeting. However the new lease jacks up the rental price by 1,100 percent. The department will now pay $1 per month, instead of $1 per year. Agenda Items • The council authorized a contract renewal with CalFire for the city's fire and emergency medical dispatch services. The contract is for a maximum of $100,906 for a 1-year period ending in See COLLEGE, page 7A Wine fills pool's coffers Daily News photo by Julie Zeeb Blues For the Pool Committee Member Adam Jackson talks with Caylan Brown of Red Bluff Saturday at the final wine tasting fundraiser.
