WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM 14 UCW APRIL 7-13, 2021 EVENT The North Carolina Museum of History opened its newest permanent exhibit April 6 titled Answering the Call: Experiences of North Carolina's Military Veterans, 1898–1945. Admission is free and tickets are not required for entry. Hours of operation will be Tuesday – Saturday 9-11 a.m. for immunocompromised and senior citizens; Tuesday – Saturday 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. for the general public; and Sunday 12–5 p.m. for the general public. Visit w w w.ncmuseumof history. org/about/plan-your-visit for details. This exhibit, produced by staff members of the North Carolina Museum of History, will lead visi - tors on a voyage of discovery related to the mili- tary experiences of those North Carolinians who stepped up to "answer the call" to service. Moving through time, visitors will learn about the lives of soldiers during each conf lict and interwar period — from the Spanish-American War (1898) through World War II (1941–1945) — using artifacts, vignet - tes, graphics, video clips and oral histories. "Rather than retelling the military and political history of each conf lict, Answering the Call focu- ses on the individuals who became involved," said Charlie Knight, curator of military history at the museum. "Seeing how everyday people got caught up in major national and world events provides a much more human connection between museum visitors and the past. The conf licts and time peri - ods in large part are simply a backdrop — the people take center stage." "The goal is to make this exhibit more than just guns and places on a map," Knight said. "We worked to put a human face — a North Carolina face — to our military story. These efforts may have taken the form of a short biographical panel, a video with actors retelling a person's story, or audio clips of veterans themselves recounting their experience." Highlighted Artifacts of the Exhibit include a Medal of Honor awarded at Veracruz, Mexico, in 1914; "Spy"-type items used by the federal Office of Strategic Services; Medals awarded to the second director of the Women's Army Corps; a World War II era pack howitzer artillery cannon; and nearly 200 other items. Media elements of the exhibit will feature ree- nacted film shorts that "bring to life" stories of people from our past using scripts based on pri- mary sources (these will be presented in the "crate video" footlockers that proved popular in our former World War I exhibit) and sound domes that present oral histories of North Carolinians associa- ted with conf licts. Visitors of the exhibit can watch historical film footage, try their hand at "lift-the-backpack" inter- active stations, and stroll through environmental vignettes that depict W WI trenches, a W WII medi- cal-aid station on Corregidor (Philippines), and the beach at Iwo Jima. Answering the Call" was made possible by funding from the North Carolina Museum of History Foundation; the North Carolina Museum of History Associates; a grant from the U.S. Department of Defense, to commemorate the 75th anniversary of World War II with a series of programs and events focused on honoring W WII veterans and helping the American people gain a better understanding of their military's history; by support from the North Carolina Department of Military and Veterans Affairs. And special thanks to the State Archives of North Carolina and the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg.
