MLB Giants St. Louis CSNB 5:15 p.m. SF — Cain STL — Miller Chicago Athletics CHICO BREAKFAST LIONS CLUB SOFTBALL & BASEBALL GAMES CSNC 7:05 p.m. MediaNews Group and DN Staff Report A two-for-one special is always welcome, and that is no different with the Chico Breakfast Lions Club high school all-star games. That's because the Lions scheduled both the George Hibdon Classic softball game and the Bob Busch Classic baseball game for the same day this year. The two contests are both Saturday at the Hooker Oak Recreation Area. The softball game is at 2 p.m. and the baseball game is at 6 p.m. A single admission of $6 will cover both games, with each set for nine innings. Net proceeds will go to a Lions charity. The games pit graduating seniors nominated by their coaches in a North vs. South format. The South squad includes schools south of Red Bluff. The North includes schools from the Oregon border to the Red Bluff area. Coaches for the baseball game are the South's Hogan Brown, who guided the Hamilton Braves to Northern Section championships the past two seasons, and Foothill's Todd Buck for the North. Coaches for the softball game are Pleasant Valley's Tony Tallerico for the South and Shasta's Karen Fifield for the North. The North softball team has two of Fifield's players in Shasta's Danielle Chabolla and Alexandra Silva. The rest of the team includes Red Bluff's Haley Harris, whose play at second base helped lead the Spartans to a Northern Section title game, Foothill's Sarah Seely, West Valley's Ashley Long, Central Valley's Jamie Weatherbee, Lassen's Laken Cagle, Fall River's Maryann Parker, Modoc's Courtney Knoch, Mount Shasta's Blakeley Bryan, Big Valley's Courtney James, Liberty Christian's Hannah Knowles, Hayfork's Ivy Patton, Chester's Emily LaGroue, University Prep's Megan O'Loughlin, and Jessie Eiler and Jasmine Bigham, both of Etna. Tallerico will have two of his players for the softball game, and would have had a third if it weren't for a shoulder injury late in the season to catcher/first baseman Jessica Gallaway. Pleasant Valley's Kaylie Hull and Mattea Belmonte will be on the team. The two took care of the left side of PV's infield with Hull at third base and Belmonte at shortstop. Chico's Jade Smith, the Panthers' lone senior, was chosen for the game, but an injury that cut short the ace pitcher's season will also prevent her from playing Saturday. Tallerico, though, can get some innings from Paradise's Jessie Salsbury and Danielle Kelm. The two both pitched for the Bobcats, which like Tallerico's Vikings, won a section title. The South team includes Corning's Kristin Cox, Oroville's Ashley Jenkins, Britteny Jenkins and Amanda Nelson. Durham's Stephanie Husa and Kayla Killingsworth, Gridley's Fraine Cox, Willows' Samantha Brott, Sutter's Maddy Levin, Live Oak's Taylor Benzel, Quincy's Shayla Sennett, Maxwell's Allison Costa, Lindhurst's Shawna Hulsey complete the South roster. The South baseball team seems to come in pairs as two players each from Chico, Pleasant Valley, Hamilton, Sutter and Yuba City. The South players include Pleasant Valley's Matt Henderson and Michael Sanderson, Chico's Morey Marshall and Clayton Schuler, Oroville's Bodie Marikas, Hamilton's Adolfo Diaz and Dylan Shippelhoute, Willows' Clark Love, Sutter's Nathan Ahlers and Lucas Cryer, Yuba City's Cooper Goldby and Justin Noreen, Portola's Ricky Lowdermilk, Winters' Adam Martinez, Wheatland's Michael Woods, Colusa's Lucas Corriea, Marysville's Chad Perry and River Valley's Stuart Bradley. Buck selected three of his players to join him on the North as Foothill's Eli Putnam, Sean Clark and Colton Landreth will play. Red Bluff's Evan Sinclair, whose exceptional season helped the Spartans reach a section title game, also was selected for the squad. And Mercy's Harlow Johnson rounds out Tehama County's group of all-star representatives. Other North players include: Shasta's Larson Parks, West Valley's Austin Lobue, Lassen's Joey Beck, Enterprise's Zack Trueblood, Yreka's Cody Hoff and Christian Charles, Anderson's Charles Edwards, Chester's Colin Houlihan, Etna's Preston Munson, Fall River's Sterling Humphrey and Jesse Lee, Redding Christian's David Robinson, American Christian Academy's Malachi May, and Happy Camp's Brandon Tripp. In the 2012 baseball game, the North beat the South 11-10. Last year's softball game also went to the North, which won 8-0. The contests are named in memory of two longtime members and past presidents of the Chico Breakfast Lions Club. Coaches are picked by their peers and players are graduating seniors nominated by their coaches. Griffin knows plenty about Barry Zito's pitching pedigree, like that AL Cy Young Award the left-hander won while with Oakland in 2002. Zito hung in there against his former club to outdo Griffin, and the Athletics missed on a chance to sweep the reigning World Series champions in a 5-2 loss Thursday that snapped their six-game winning streak. While right-handed, Griffin is even considered a younger version of the veteran southpaw with his similar style and big curveball. Griffin gave up four runs and five hits, struck out five and walked one in 5 2-3 innings. ''Barry has been around a long time for a reason. He did a great job of keeping his team in the game. Despite the walks, he got us,'' Griffin said. ''My job is to not let them score and they scored four runs off me. It was pretty disappointing.'' The A's had chances against Zito in each of the first five innings but managed only Coco Crisp's RBI single in the second. Crisp had the only three Oakland hits off the lefty, too. ''You saw the ball to strike ratio with Zito and it wasn't good,'' A's manager Bob Melvin said. ''He ended up making big pitches when he had to, whether he was behind in the count or not.'' Pablo Sandoval hit a goahead two-run single in the sixth and Brandon Belt doubled in two runs in the fourrun inning to help Zito end a six-start winless stretch. A day after San Francisco made three errors and two other defensive miscues, the Giants finally got to Griffin (5-4) for their lone win in the four-game interleague rivalry between last year's West division champions. ''There's some pride involved,'' Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. ''The last thing you want to do is get swept here in this Bay Series.'' Zito (4-3) won against his former club for his first victory since beating San Diego at home April 21. The Giants improved to 7-0 in his home outings and have won 13 straight regular-season games started by Zito at AT&T Park. San Francisco hasn't lost a home start by Zito since last Aug. 2 against the New York Mets. Yoenis Cespedes added an RBI single in the seventh for the A's, extending his career-best hitting streak to 12 games. Oakland (31-24) missed a chance to move a seasonbest nine games over .500 and lost for only the second time in 13 games. ''I think our team showed a lot of fire and we were competitive,'' A's third baseman Josh Donaldson said. ''You go through a season and get tons of opportunities when you don't come through. But at the same time we're playing the game right way and I guarantee you we'll be ready for the White Sox.'' The Giants lost the first three games of this Bay Area rivalry to drop the season series for the first time since going 2-4 in 2008 after a sloppy 9-6 loss Wednesday night. San Francisco avoided its first season sweep by the A's since the clubs began playing interleague matchups in 1997. ''Last night we were pretty tenacious,'' Melvin said. ''They roared back and we not only stemmed the tide but even added on. We feel like every time we take the field we have a chance to win.'' Zito faced trouble in each of his first five innings before finishing his day with a 1-2-3 sixth. He delivered just the third quality start in the past 16 by the Giants' struggling rotation. Zito is 3-4 in seven career starts against his old team. ''I get some juice just because it's a tough team,'' Zito said. ''We've got a lot of talent in the Bay right now. It's good to see. We definitely know what we need to do, we have to go out there and be better on the starting side.'' NBA Source: Warriors assistant reaches deal to head Kings AP file photo Golden State Warriors assistant coach Michael Malone, left, talks with Charles Jenkins. OAKLAND (AP) — Incoming Sacramento Kings owner Vivek Ranadive is already making moves to rebuild the fallen franchise. The Kings have an agreement in place with Golden State Warriors assistant Mike Malone to be their head coach, a person familiar with the decision said Thursday night. The person, who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to speak publicly, said Malone was Ranadive's top choice. Ranadive has been a minority owner of the Warriors the past three seasons and is in the final stages of closing a sale with the Maloof family to buy the Kings. Malone's hiring officially ends Keith Smart's tenure. Smart took over the Kings for the fired Paul Westphal in January 2012 and had one year remaining on his contract. Yahoo Sports, which first reported the agreement, said Malone's deal is for four years and $9 million, with the fourth year being a team option. Ranadive had promised to move swiftly in revamping a franchise that has missed the playoffs seven straight years. The NBA Board of Governors unanimously approved the sale of the Kings to the TIBCO Software chairman Tuesday, though the actual sale of the team to Ranadive's group — which will acquire a 65 percent controlling interests at a total franchise valuation of $535 million — still has to close escrow. The Kings can't announce any deals until the sale is complete. Under NBA rules, Ranadive will have to sell his minority stake in the Warriors. He also still has to hire a general manager, a move that typically comes before finding a coach; the contract for president of basketball operations Geoff Petrie ends June 30. Malone, the son of former NBA coach Brendan Malone, has been an assistant in the league for more than a decade and engineered defensive turnarounds at almost every stop — which includes the Warriors, New Orleans, Cleveland and the New York Knicks. He also was an assistant at Manhattan College, Providence and Oakland University (Rochester, Mich.).
