Friday, May 31, 2013 – Daily News Bell-Carter awarded energy savings rebate The largest table olive producer in the U.S., Bell-Carter Foods, Inc., was presented with a rebate check last week from Pacific Gas & Electric for $67,324, honoring the company's active dedication to reducing energy consumption at both the Bell-Carter headquarters in Lafayette and production plant in Corning. This is the second year Bell-Carter has been awarded with a rebate check. The company received $114,475 in 2011 for Phase I of its energy-saving projects, which successfully saved more than 724 tons of carbon dioxide emissions. Recouping that amount of carbon dioxide emissions resulted in $322,899 of energy cost savings. Phase I consisted of installing dissolved oxygen controls and sensors, as well as optimizing efficiency of the aerators. Phase II of the projects were implemented in 2012 and successfully reached an annual savings of about 855 tons of carbon dioxide emissions and $711,967 in bill reduction. "Our operations team has worked very hard to make sure Bell-Carter Foods is not just reducing energy consumption as a company, but also has a positive impact on our community and environment," said Andal Allison, marketing manager. "We are honored to accept this rebate and look forward to developing additional programs so we are continuously decreasing our carbon footprint." Bell-Carter Foods was founded in 1912 and is the largest table olive producer in the U.S. and the second largest in the world. "No one should be forced to choose between paying for food, rent or medicine because of the high cost of prescriptions and that's why we've partnered with FamilyWize to distribute free prescription discount cards to everyone in Northern California," said Wendy Zanotelli, CEO of United Way of Northern California. "People in our nine Northern California counties have already saved over $1.5 million dollars since our partnership began in 2007, and $626,000 in 2012 alone." FamilyWize cards immediately lower the cost of medicine by an average of 35 percent or more for people without insurance or who take medications not covered by their plan. By just presenting the card at their local, participating pharmacy, customers save on the cost of their prescription medicine 80 percent of the time. These cards can be used by everyone in the community, not just people without insurance and can even help community members who have health benefits, including Medicaid or Medicare. FamilyWize cards are being distributed to medical offices, pharmacies and non-profits in the North State. If you are a community member seeking a card, or a business that would like to make the cards available to their clients, call the United Way office at (530) 241-7521 or visit www.FamilyWize.org to print a card, look up prescription prices and obtain a list of participating pharmacies.
