Wednesday, May 1, 2013 – Daily News Sign Wranglers in Round-Up Parade Breaking form the tradition of high stepping horses, marching bands, deserving causes and fun loving kids, the RoundUp parade added a new feature — the first NorCal Sign Wrangler Competition. To help introduce the upcoming 2-1-1 program to Tehama County and to recognize some of the best sign wranglers, also known as sign spinners, Tehama Together's parade entry featured eight sign wranglers. In the competition, sponsored by Truman Christ Insurance, Liberty Tax had three wranglers. Redding native Nick Louck, a third season Liberty Tax wrangler who recently participated in a national competition, stole the show with his acrobatics on his jumping stilts. He was joined by another Redding national competitor Kyle Vanson and Chico wrangler John Gettis. Scored by judges on appearance, public engagement and choreography, these three won the group championship and Nick won the individual championship award. Red Bluff was represented in the competition by the individual runnerup champion, Shawn Mead wrangling for Tai's Deli. New Castle Mortgage was represented by Austin Charlson, Preferred Agents was represented by John Sigur, Dolling Insurance by Sam Niles and Tehama Together by Belle Charlson. "This is just the beginning, said Rudy Gallardo, Liberty Tax regional manager. "The second annual competition will be much larger." Dennis Albright, Tehama Together board vice chairman, said he looks forward to making the Nor-Cal Sign Wrangler competition a major feature of the annual Round-Up parade. Tehama Together, in collaboration with the United Way of Northern California, has an application pending with the California Public Utilities Commission and expects to have 2-1-1Tehama operational in the next few months providing live and on-line 24-7 health and human service referrals for Tehama County residents. Initial funding for this program has been pledged from First 5 Tehama, Dignity Health, Tehama County Deputy Sheriff Association, Tehama County Social Service Agency, Tehama County Health Service Agency and Tehama County Administration. Jennifer Pilgen thanked Kiwanis for its long-standing annual support of the local little league which gives nearly 150 kids an opportunity to play their favorite sport. She also expressed appreciation for Kiwanis cooking breakfast for 130 hungry fans the opening day of the season. Central Tehama Kiwanis works to benefit the youth of Tehama County with many service activities, including scholarships and annual sponsorship of the invitational boys and girls basketball tournaments for area grammar schools. They meet every Thursday morning from 6:30 to 7:30 at Mill Creek Restaurant in Los Molinos. The public is invited to attend. Corps of Black Belts holds meeting The Corp of Black Belts held a meeting recently to discuss what should come next in the PAL Martial Arts Program, including fund raising, student safety and training ideas for the next few months. They also were reminded on when the program started (1998) and what it has accomplished over the 15-year period. One item they all agreed on was that the youth program should consider carefully on whether or not to accept any more students, no matter what their age, because of the lack of volunteer assistant instructors available. It's a numbers game now. The program needs trainable adults that can volunteer either on Mondays or Thursdays or both from 3:30-5 p.m. Assistants must first be approved by PAL through DOJ and martial arts experience is not required but having some coaching experience in youth sports or activities is preferred. Special training for black belts only was also discussed and Friday evenings is being considered. Three to four hours on the last Saturday of the month for green belts and above only is also desirable. An idea of a car wash and a 5K run and a Samurai Camp is going to be mentioned to all the other members of the dojo soon. The 5K run will be reviewed but an idea of a "Run Drugs Out of Town" race was mentioned both as a message and a fund raiser for the program. "Run Drugs Out of Town" was created in 2000 and contact has been made with its organizers. The meeting went 2:30-5 p.m. and the crew also did some housekeeping. This was an important meeting and everyone brought great ideas to dojo. The theme of the program is: "Every child needs another healthy adult in their life." PAL strives towards this but can only do so much with limited volunteers and support. Dojo hours of operation are on Mondays and Thursdays, 3:30-5 p.m. for youth and the self defense for women, seniors and others who feel vulnrable to violence is held each Wednesday, 5:30-6:30 p.m. PAL and ATV have a special commitment to the safety of those who feel especially vulnerable to violence.
