See WINS, page 2B HIGH SCHOOL TENNIS Red Bluff hands visiting Shasta first loss with 5-4 win By DN Staff Report Red Bluff High's boys tennis team took down a formidable foe at Red Bluff High School on Tuesday, beating the previously unbeaten Shasta Wolves 5-4. In No. 1 singles, the Spartans' Thunder Shaffer pulled out a 3- set win over Shasta's Chad Mallamo-Janski, 6-2, 6-7 (6), 7-5. CJ Varner pulled out a win in No. 2 singles as T.J. Aukland defaulted the match after winning the first set 7-6 (5). Shasta notched wins in No. 3 and No. 4 singles as Alex Lidster and Mitchell Martinez pulled out wins against Arif Selvitopu (2-6, 0-6) and Curtis Twitchell (4-6, 36). The Spartans' Cory Twitchell beat Ryan Hanson in three sets, 6-4, 0-6, 6-3 and the Wolves' Darren Stapp beat Garrett Ward 6-1, 6-4. In doubles, Shaffer and Varn- er teamed up to down MallamoJanski and Alex Lidster, 10-5. The Wolves gained a win at No. 2 doubles as Martinez and Hanson beat the Curtis and Cory Twitchell, 12-10. But the Spartans' Jay Boone and Ward beat Tommy Carroll and Connor Lidster 10-5. DAILY NEWS RED BLUFF TEHAMA COUNTY ATHLETES OF THE WEEK Zito gets 1st loss of season MILWAUKEE (AP) — Yuniesky Betancourt hit a grand slam, and Carlos Gomez and Norichika Aoki also homered as the Milwaukee Brewers used an eight-run third inning to beat Barry Zito and the San Francisco Giants 10-8 on Tuesday night. Betancourt's fifth career grand slam highlighted the seven-hit inning that chased Zito, who hadn't lost since last August against the New York Mets. Rickie Weeks doubled home two runs and Jonathan Lucroy added a two-run single as the Brewers sent 12 batters to the plate. Zito faced 11 of them. Zito (2-1) had opened the season with consecutive scoreless seven-inning games. He struck out five and walked two in 2 2-3 innings and his 0.00 ERA ballooned to 4.86 ERA. Dating to last season, the Giants had won the previous 13 regular-season games started by Zito. DN Sports Editor Red Bluff High's softball team had its biggest test of the season against the visiting Foothill Cougars on Tuesday, but was able to escape with two wins in a doubleheader to stay unbeaten in the Sac River League. In game 1, the Spartans (17-3, 8-0 SRL) and Cougars (7-11-1 0-5 SRL) battled to extra innings, when in the bottom of the eighth and the game tied at 3-all, Red Bluff High's Samantha Jones put down a bunt with two outs that scored Cheyanne Grannes and gave the Spartans a 4-3 win. The Spartans would rally to beat the Cougars 6-5 in game 2. "Two one-run games. That's kind of the mark of this team this year," Spartans coach J Howell said. "They've figured out ways to win all these tight games. That's the mark of a quality team and it's a real tribute to the hard work the girls have put in."
