Burrell homers as Giants beat Athletics 6-2 SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Pat Burrell hit a go-ahead two-run homer in his Giants home debut back in his native Bay Area, helping Tim Lince- cum end a four-start win- less streak and lead San Francisco past the Oakland Athletics 6-2 on Friday night in the Bay Bridge Series. Bengie Molina added a two-run shot of his own in the sixth off Gio Gonzalez (6-4), ending a 98 at-bat homerless streak. The two runs from Burrell’s homer doubled the Giants’ total from all three games of a sweep by the A’s last month across the bay in Oakland. His first drive since join- ing San Francisco on June 4 also snapped a 22-inning scoreless streak against the A’s. Lincecum (6-2), the two-time reigning NL Cy Young Award win- ner, won for the first time since May 15 against Houston and ended a two-start skid at home. Lincecum sure seems back on track. He allowed two runs on seven hits, struck out seven and walked one in eight innings. Brian Wilson relieved Jeremy Affeldt in the ninth with two outs and runners on the corners, getting Cliff Pennington on a called third strike to end it for his 16th save in 18 chances. Giants manager Bruce Bochy moved rookie Buster Posey up to the No. 3 hole for the first time and dropped the struggling Pablo San- doval to seventh. Posey delivered with an RBI triple in the seventh, when San Francisco scored anoth- er run on Tyson Ross’ wild pitch. The hit gave Posey a 10-game hitting streak, longest by an NL rookie in 2010. Oakland’s Kevin Kouzmanoff extended his career-best hitting streak to 12 games with an RBI single in the first that scored Ryan Sweeney after he advanced twice on wild pitches. It took Lincecum 17 pitches to get through the inning. After that, he cruised. Gabe Gross grounded out to end the first, starting a stretch in which Lincecum retired 16 of 17 batters and allowed only a one-out walk to Mark Ellis in the third before Kouzmanoff singled leading off the seventh. Jack Cust had a pinch- hit RBI single in the eighth for the A’s, who were managed by bench coach Tye Waller as Bob Geren was attending the high school graduation of his son, Bobby. Gonzalez lost for the first time in six starts since a defeat May 12 at Texas. The lefty combined with closer Andrew Bailey on a three- hit shutout of San Francisco on May 22. Gonzalez struck out on four pitches in his first career at-bat and first since 2006 while with Double-A Reading in the Phillies organization. He was 2 for 16 that season. Ellis stole second against Lince- cum in the third. Runners have gone 17 of 17 on steal attempts with Lincecum on the mound dat- ing to last season, including 14 for 14 this year. But Ellis also was called out in a close play at the plate in the first inning on a throw home from Posey at first. The Giants improved to 5-0 while wearing their ‘‘Orange Fri- day’’ home jerseys, outscoring opponents 28-7. NOTES: Giants LF Mark DeRosa, sidelined while dealing with numbness and nerve irritation in his left wrist and hand, was undergoing further tests Friday. A decision on the next step for him could be made in the coming days, and surgery is a possibility. ... Oak- land CF Rajai Davis, whose left hamstring tightened up on a triple Monday, missed his fourth straight start but was expected to return to the lineup Saturday. ... C Landon Powell was called up from Triple- A Sacramento to replace Kurt Suzuki, who is on the bereavement list for the weekend series. ... The Giants sold out for the eighth time this season (41,817). Weekend June 12, 2010 Lincecum back on track South Africa-Mexico JOHANNESBURG (AP) — A joyous day for South Africa. A not quite perfect result. South Africa gave up the lead on a goal by Mexico’s Rafael Marquez in the 79th minute and settled for a 1-1 draw Friday before 84,000 horn-blaring fans, whose euphoria over the start of the first World Cup on the continent was only slightly dimmed by the tie. The match followed a day of celebration throughout all of Africa — though the excitement was tempered by the death of Nelson Mandela’s great-granddaughter in a car accident on the eve of the opener. Beyond the personal heartbreak, the tragedy stole a moment of triumph from the 91-year-old anti-apartheid leader, who campaigned to bring the World Cup to his nation despite skepticism it could be pulled off. Mandela mourned with his family and opted not to attend the match or the col- orful opening ceremony that preceded it. Siphiwe Tshabalala had given the host nation a dream start, finishing off an excellent move in the 55th minute to set off wild celebrations at Soccer City. But the South Africans left defender Marquez open and he collected a left-wing cross to score the tying goal. ‘‘We could easily have won the game,’’ coach Carlos Alberto Parreira said. ‘‘All in all at the end a draw is a fair result. We are still in the competition, this group is very tough.’’ As pledged by coach Javier Aguirre, the Mexicans attacked in force from the kickoff and the hosts should have been a goal down within the first two minutes when goal- keeper Itumeleng Khune fumbled a low cross. Giovani dos Santos had a chance for an easy shot, but South Africa cap- tain Aaron Mokoena blocked it. The aggressive Mexicans continued to create chances, but lacked accuracy and, when Carlos Vela put the ball in the net from a flicked-on corner, it was called offsides. The South Africans they went ahead with a superb series of passes and an accurate finishing shot. Teko Modise found Tshabalala clear of the Mexican defense, and the winger let fly with a powerful left-footed shot that flew past keeper Oscar Perez into the top far corner. ‘‘It was a great goal, very special for me,’’ Tshabalala said. ‘‘It was something of a present because I was celebrat- ing my 50th appearance.’’ France 0, Uruguay 0 CAPE TOWN, South Africa (AP) — Nil-nil draws can be the scourge of soccer. Yet nobody who participated in Fri- day night’s 0-0 World Cup match between France and Uruguay was complaining. The game between former champions produced an open- ing day dud, yet there was much satisfaction expressed by each team for gaining a point. ‘‘It is almost a beautiful 0-0,’’ France coach Raymond Domenech said. ‘‘But the result is what it is.’’ Even if some of the tournament’s top stars — France’s Franck Ribery and Uruguay’s Diego Forlan — showed flashes, the fear of losing the opening game stifled both offenses. The low point came when Uruguay’s Nicolas Lodeiro was ejected after a wild challenge on Bacary Sagna in the 81st minute for his second yellow card. In the end, an early short-range miss by France’s Sidney Govou and an excellent save from Uruguay’s Fernando Muslera left Group A as wide open as possible. ‘‘There weren’t many chances for either team, neither team wanted to take many chances,’’ Forlan said. ‘‘It was very complicated. The whole game was equal, I thought.’’ Down to 10 men for the last 9 minutes plus 3 minutes of injury time, Uruguay concentrated on kicking the ball away from its penalty area and net. But even with a man up, France failed to find a goal.
