4B – Daily News – Saturday, June 12, 2010 Religion Faith&Worship Church news Church Without Walls returns The Church Without Walls returns for a second season at the Red Bluff River Park. The church is a non-denominational worship service that will meet 2-4 p.m. every Sunday June 13 through Aug. 29. This free event in open to the public and all churches are encouraged to come to the park and worship as one body. Christian bands and worship leaders are being invited as well as individuals with testimonies of their own personal experi- ences of recovery or deliverance to participate. This is a fam- ily event featuring an outdoor Sunday school for children with live bands and free food — both spiritual and physical. Featured will be guest speakers from the Christians in Action ministries, a pastor from Uganda and local author Michael “Chainsaw ” Hill, who will share his inspiring tes- timony. Many local churches are coming together to orga- nize the 4th of July event.Bring your lawn chairs and blan- kets and spend the day at the park. If you are a church attendee already, come and fellowship with the body in a church atmosphere that truly has no walls. If you are looking for a mission project, you don’t have to look any further than your own backyard. We are minister- ing to the whole community — the churched and the un- churched, the ones with homes and the ones without, the poor and the not so poor, the lost and the found. If your church or faith-based non-profit group would like to partici- pate or contribute in any way, call Susan at 567-5031 or visit www.thechurchwithoutwalls.us. Fourth of July event The Red Bluff Ministerial Association is sponsoring a Fourth of July event at the Red Bluff City Park. The event, from 10:30 a.m. until noon, will include a worship band comprised of youth from various churches and a message presented by the President of the Red Bluff Ministerial Asso- ciation, Pastor Steve Igarta. Water slides and an obstacle course for the kids, Bocce ball and horseshoe tournaments for the Adults. The public is invited to attend. Please bring a lawn chair, dry clothes and towel for each of your children and your pic- nic lunch (if you choose not to buy from a vendor). Amosque at Ground Zero I will put my own commitment to the freedom of speech and religion up against those of anyone else. At the same time I will applaud the action of Attorney General Jerry Brown in filing suit before the Supreme Court — along with forty- seven other state attorneys general — to stop the likes of the Rev. Fred Phelps from going to the funerals of soldiers killed in the War on Terror for the express purpose of celebrat- ing their deaths in the faces of their grieving relatives. Such hate-filled behavior is no more protected under the constitution than yelling "Fire!" in a crowded theatre — and courts over the years have made a consistent witness to that reality prior to the fed- eral appeals court overturning the recent judgment against Phelps. Forty states have passed laws forbid- ding the kind of assault behavior for which Phelps is infamous — shout- ing at parents that their children died because the United States tolerates homosexuality. I believe with all my heart that the Supreme Court will get this one right and put Phelps where he belongs –—in a circus. But what can we say about plans to build a mosque two blocks from Ground Zero in New York City? Is this an exercise in freedom of speech and religion or is it a poke in the eye with a sharp stick to the families of the dead of 911 and the nation as well? I believe the answer is obvi- ous, although New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and the politi- cally correct crowd think otherwise. Muslim authorities plan a thirteen story mosque and cultural center that will inject itself into the 911 history both literally and implicitly. Its pres- ence within arms’ reach of the site of the carnage of 2001 is an implicit Bronx cheer from the co-religionists of those who openly claimed their faith drove them to kill as many Americans as possible. How would Turks feel if a monument to the Cru- saders who sacked and burned Istanbul were erected in the heart of that city? But the explicit mes- sage carved into the museum and cultural cen- ter calls it a monument to those who stood in soli- darity with the Islamic community on that day of death and destruction. It hides the reason the peo- ple died by omission and it makes the outright lie that the Muslim commu- nity condemned the attacks from the get-go. In fact, the initial response ranged from a deafening silence to dancing in the streets. Whether or not this is a case of hating in the faces of the grieving — as in the case of Phelps and the funerals — can be debated. (I believe that it is.) But the sources of funding can be addressed more prag- matically – and should be. The foundation that owns the building to be converted into the so- called Cordoba Center — named for the site of a Muslim military victory in medieval Spain — has no money. They have received donations of less than one hundred thousand dollars and the project will require more like a hundred million. Yet they are con- fident of the cash, and they did man- age to buy the five million dollar building to be re-cast. Experts believe the money will come from Saudi Arabia or Iran. The federal government has the constitutional right and authority to allow or forbid funds from overseas into the country — for any purpose. My prayer is that the government would simply funds from outside the country to be used for this building — and solve the James Wilson GodTalk problem in one deft stroke. May God bless the Muslim peo- ple who seek both truth and freedom from their hearts; they will eventually find it in the Son of Abraham as all of us ultimately will. Jeremiah 29:11-14 promises that all who seek the face of God will not fail to find Him. We Christians and Jews who follow a different path need not fret as to whether all oth- ers are in agreement with us — the very Bible we claim to reverence says this is not our problem. And that same Bible forbids us to curse anyone, however we may believe ourselves provoked — at least the New Testa- ment, in Romans 12:14, for- bids Christians. I am pretty sure that secular Americans who know and respect our long history of showing compassion to our defeated enemies will take these marching orders even if they don’t care about what the Bible says. But it is just plain crazy to invite the people who caused us pain to mock us in our pain by erecting a monument to the suicide bombers of 911. The Constitution no more pro- tects that craziness than it does the Rev. Phelps. Jim Wilson co-coordinates PrayNorthState with his wife, Diana. Theirs is a ministry of gathering the Body of Christ for prayer and proclamation of all that God is doing in our land, and for equipping God's people as ambassadors of His reconciliation. He is the author of Living As Ambassadors of Relationships and The Holy Spirit and the End Times — available at local bookstores or by e-mailing him at praynorthstate@charter.net. Golf fundraiser for orphanage A golf tournament fundraiser is schedule at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 12, at Oak Creek Golf Course organized by Vineyard Christian Fel- lowship.
