Tuesday, June 8, 2010 – Daily News – 5A 4 Generations Paskenta Pioneer Day results If you happened to be driving through the small country town of Paskenta on April 25 of April you would have been one of the many spectators of the 69th Paskenta Pio- neer Day Parade. What is normally a very quiet main street on that day was a 26- contestant parade. Berendos Parlor, Native Daughters of the Golden West recently held a potluck to celebrate their 107th Anniversary. In attendance were four generations of the family of Mildred Pierce, all of whom are native born Californi- ans. Pictured are great-grandmother Mildred Pierce, great-aunt Carol Mieske, grandmother Chris Rainwa- ter, all three Past Presidents of Berendos Parlor, and mother Monica Martinez, also a member of Berendos Parlor, and Monica's daughters Madeline and Ava Aldona. Madeline and Ava were visiting from Scott's Valley, California, and this was their first Native Daughters meeting. Native Daughters of the Golden West is a service club for Native born Californians. Their emphasis is home, family, flag and God. Their purposes are to pro- mote a love for California and it's pioneers, patriotism, historical preservation and promoting youth through flag education in the public schools, and providing scholarships. The colors were proudly dis- played by riders Randy Humphrey and Carmie Biaggi with her son Nick riding along side. There was quite an assortment of sights to see in this year's parade including a couple of local girls dressed up as milk cows being rus- tled by the riders behind them, a pony turned unicorn, ponies gone wild and 1947 and 1950 Case Trac- tors that were restored and driven by owner Andrew Miller, great grandson Sammy and his son-in- law Guido Maddalena. Sean Lynch and Smokey the Bear joined the parade representing the US Forest Service. The parade ended with everyone gathered in the arena at Simpson Finnell Park. The National Anthem was sung beautifully by Ann Trevi- no, Shelbie Fryar and Jessica Ward. Everyone joined in a moment of silence honoring Dona Flournoy Stewart, long time resident and one of the founders of Paskenta Pioneer Day. Once the events were underway, time flew by and organizers announced the winner of the Neva Luce Trophy. This is an award that is based on horsemanship, sports- manship and showmanship in honor of the late Neva Luce. It is judged by a group of anonymous judges throughout the day. The winner this year was Jesse Mason, son of James and Robin Mason. He was presented this award by four of Neva Luce's great grandchildren, Cheyenne Humphrey, Daniel Humphrey, Tyson Carter and Tucker Carter. There were some errors made when the winners were announced for the parade contestants. The cor- rect ribbons will be sent and the record keeper expresses her apolo- gies for the mistake.
