Damages for hip replacement LOS ANGELES (AP) — A jury Friday awarded $8.3 million to a former prison guard who accused Johnson & Johnson's DePuy Orthopaedics subsidiary of knowingly marketing a faulty hip implant that was later recalled. Jurors found that the ASR XL implant was defectively designed and caused metal poisoning and other health problems suffered by Loren Kransky after he underwent surgery in 2007. However, the panel rejected the 65-year-old's claim that DePuy failed to adequately warn of the risks associated with the implant, and it didn't find the company acted with malice, prohibiting Kransky from collecting any punitive damages. 7A Man arrested after trying to back over cops By JULIE ZEEB DN Staff Writer A Corning man was arrested early Friday morning in the McCoy's Hardware Store parking lot after reportedly trying to back up toward several officers. Corning Police officers were sent at 3:37 a.m. Friday to the store, at 2060 South Ave., for reports of a suspicious U-Haul van. Upon arrival, officers found a man, identified as Jason Michael Stewart, 36, and a woman and QUEEN Pat McMahon, Virginia decided to build a court behind the house. Fondly named "the home court," the asphalt was laid while Virginia and Bev painted the lines and helped spread the topcoat. Virginia, along with Gillaspy and McMahon, were fierce competitors on the local tennis circuit. "They were crafty," says Shaffer. "And because of that, they were very hard to beat." Daughter Kathy remembers when the Kaer girls brought home their athletic boyfriends from Red Bluff High and none could pull off a win against Virginia. "They couldn't believe she could beat them," said Kathy, who lives in Rocklin. Some of those notable athletes frustrated by Virginia's victories include Steve Donnelly and Matt Arrowsmith. It became clear that a tennis club was important to Virginia and Mort, an avid golfer, decided it was time to jump on board. "Her method of telling you how to do something was pretty good," said Mort as he recalls piling all four kids in the car and driving them around Red Bluff, knocking on doors with flyers about a future tennis club. Virginia Kaer Celebration of Life Continued from page 1A ta, Kathy in Crescent City while Mort was building his business, Mort's Hamburger Stand — the hamburger joint still stands and is the first one driving into Crescent City from the south. Finally, Andy was born in Grants Pass, Ore. in 1964. Virginia's casual enjoyment of tennis began when Mort took a teaching job in Los Molinos and the family of six moved to Tehama County in 1966. After a brief stint in Corning, the family built their present day home on Mort's grandfather's Kaer Avenue property. "My grandmother saw beautiful pictures of California," said Mort about his Danish immigrant grandparents' grocery store days in Omaha, Neb. "They came out here in August east of Vina and it was so hot and dry, they realized they couldn't farm the ground so he bought the Red Bluff parcel for a $20 gold piece." That $20 investment has been home to Valley Oak Racquet Club since 1977. The club was built to avoid traveling to Redding and Chico for every match and because there was a wait time for courts at Red Bluff High School, says daughter Kristin Stanton of St. Helena. "Mom told us that as soon as we learned to keep score, we wouldn't get kicked off the high school courts." Stanton said. "I was in sixth grade." After a few years playing at the high school with friends Bev Gillaspy and ordered them to get out of the car. While the woman got out, Stewart remained in the vehicle, moving into the driver's seat and putting it in reverse, headed straight toward the officers, according to a Corning Police Department press release. Officers from the California Highway Patrol and Tehama County Sheriff's Department responded to assist, however, Stewart, who had outstanding warrants for $261,000 out of Tehama County, continued to ignore orders by the officers. Eventually, the window of the scape architect Carl Rottschaulk, the plans were placed on a large display board for Red Bluff to visualize in case the kids going door-to-door needed more than just a flyer to sell the club. With a yes and a $100 commitment from 100 Red Bluff families, ground broke on Valley Oak Racquet Club and the doors opened in 1977. Audrey Risberg is the only living, current member of the original 100. "Valley Oak Racquet Club has been an important and meaningful part of my life," said Audrey at her Red Bluff home. "Mort and Virginia kept my love of tennis alive with club activities which made it possible for me to make life long friends. I will always be grateful to them." Not only were many Red Bluff families enjoying the new club but three of the four Kaer children spent enough time on the courts to earn college tennis scholarships. Kristin played for Idaho State and earned a degree in the dental field; Kathy played as a Razorback for the University of Arkansas and has a degree in psychology while Andy played tennis for William Carrie College in Mississippi and has a liberal arts degree. Karen graduated with a business degree from Chico State and uses that to $1,700 between two of us. We're not a huge business. We're just local people trying to do what we can to help." Under the current CDBG rules, Tehama County will only be able to submit another project for funding next year, such as the Sky View project, if more than 50 percent of awarded funds are spent by the end of the calendar year. Ashby said judging by the state's usual timetable for announcing project winners and dispersing manage the family-owned club. "There was no other option but college," said Karen. While many sport specific families struggle with the intensity of their parents, all the Kaer siblings embrace the sport of tennis today and are active in their communities. Karen is the varsity girls' tennis coach at Red Bluff High, Kristin coaches the varsity team at St. Helena High School and Kathy coaches the girls' team at Rio Linda High School. Andy has coached and worked as a tennis pro off and on for many years. All four still compete in USTA events. Even the grandchildren are dedicated and passionate about the sport. Thunder and Ginger Shaffer play No. 1 singles for Red Bluff High while Molly Garcia-Kaer plays #4 singles for Rocklin. Natalie Stanton plays USTA events in the Napa area while Andy's children aren't quite old enough for larger competitions. Tennis was a way of life for Virginia in her young adult years. Bev Gillaspy will miss the years "cussing and discussing" the kids while playing a competitive style of doubles across the north state. Pat McMahon is still coping with the loss of her close friend. "She was my very, very best friend whom I played tennis with for years," said a tearful McMahon, who is struggling with her own health. "I loved every minute of it."
