Chaplain full of team spirit CHICAGO (MCT) — It was minutes before game time and the Loyola Ramblers entered the tunnel, ready to rush onto the basketball court. But there was one last order of business. The team huddled with a 5-foot tall, 93-year-old nun wearing a Nike workout top, black skirt and maroon sneakers with gold laces. "Sister" was embroidered on the heel of one shoe. "Jean" on the other. The players bowed their heads. "As we face the Vikings today, we know what we have to do. We can win, and we are going to go out there and do it," said Sister Jean, who stands nearly two feet below the tallest player. "We want to watch especially No. 3 and No. 21 and No. 33. We have beaten them before, and we can do it again. So get in there and do it well and don't get hurt." "Amen." Officially, Sister Jean Dolores Schmidt is the chaplain for Loyola University Chicago's men's basketball team. But after nearly 20 years in that position, she's become so much more. Students chant "Sis-ter Jean" before games, and referees pose for pictures with her. She's probably the only nun to have her own Bobblehead. The tiny woman with the short white hair and thick trifocals is the team's adopted grandmother, or more aptly given her years, its great-grandmother. On Saturday, her prayers came true when the team won its last regular-season game, 87-60, against Cleveland State University before going on the road for the Horizon League playoffs that began Tuesday night. And as much as the student athletes say Schmidt keeps their spirits up, the truth is that Schmidt needs them, too. She is the star of Gentile Arena, and her face lights up the minute she walks in the door. &Worship Years ago some friends and I spent a long weekend, "Spelunking." Spelunking, for those of you who don't know, is the sport of walking and climbing in caves. We loaded our gear, boarded our jeeps, and off we went. When we got to the area where the caves were we set up camp, grabbed our flashlights and went off to explore. We found some extremely large, deep and very dark caves. While we were in the back of one of those caves a couple of us had an idea – let's turn off all of our flashlights and see if we could find our way out. The lights then went out and we were faced with the darkest black I have ever experienced. As one of my friends and I felt for our way to the exit time began to pass. We thought we were close to the entrance but still couldn't see any light. Just a little farther…it had to be close, we thought. This went on for a while longer until we finally decided to turn on the flashlights. To our amazement the two friends that stayed quietly behind were only about 20 feet from us. We had just spent all that time walking around in circles! Have you ever felt just like we did that day, in a dark place in life, just do enter that rest…" – walking around in circles? Jensen GodTalk Vinyard releases Angelica for Easter Angelica is an 18th century California wine that shares its history with Franciscan mission monks and Leland Stanford's Great Vina Ranch, now home to New Clairvaux Abbey and Vineyard. In celebration of the Lenten Season and Easter, the Trappist monks at New Clairvaux Vineyard are releasing a new vintage of Angelica, a traditional altar and sweet dessert wine. Angelica became synonymous with altar wine as early as 1769. A sweet, fortified wine traditionally made with Mission grapes, Angelica was one of the first wines made by Franciscan missionaries. Today, it is also enjoyed as a dessert wine. The name Angelica is reported to be taken from the city of angels, Los Angeles. It is light golden in color, not red as many think of altar wine. It was made from Mission grapes, which are pink and make a light-colored, golden wine. Its high alcohol content of around 18 percent is thought to destroy any microorganism when it is shared among parishioners. To make it sweet, the monks fortified the grape juice with grape brandy. This leaves a sweetness that helps balance the high alcohol. The Abbey of New Clairvaux has produced Angelica for years and is now bottling it for churches and consumers. It is made from Muscat grapes and produced according to Canon law. In 1845, Peter Lassen, the original owner of the property and vineyard that is now home to the Abbey of New Clairvaux, rode on horseback from Vina to Los Angeles to acquire Mission grape stock to plant in his Northern California vineyard. Leland Stanford, who purchased the land in 1890 also made Angelica and created one of the world's largest wineries at that time. The Abbey purchased the land in 1955 and recultivated the vineyards in 2000. It released its first wines in 2005. Today, the monks of New Clairvaux Abbey along with fifthgeneration California winemaker Aimée Sunseri produce several award-winning wines. New Clairvaux Vineyard is the only Cistercian-Trappist monastery in the Americas to grow, vinify and bottle its own wines. New Clairvaux Angeli- ca is made with slightly fermented Muscat grapes in the style made popular by Christian Brothers. Derek Holstein, consulting winemaker, had worked at Christian Brothers in the 1970s passed along this method to Sunseri and the monks. New Clairvaux released their first Angelica to the public last year, and it quickly sold out. The 2013 release is timed for upcoming Easter celebrations for use by churches and consumers. A release party is scheduled for 5:30-8 p.m. Friday March 15. The winery's tasting room is open daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. except for holy days at 26240 Seventh St. in Vina.
