F CUS On Leaders Wanted: Sign Up For Spring 2013 Citizens' Academy The City of Fayetteville wants citizens to be a part of the next Citizens' Academy in Spring 2013. Classes start Thursday, April 4 at 6 p.m. and are held each Thursday through May 16. The Citizens' Academy is free of charge. This Citizens' Academy will be fun and interactive. The class meets once a week for seven weeks and gives citizens the opportunity to learn more about local government and take ownership of their community. The Citizens' Academy also helps citizens understand how the City provides services to residents. Citizens learn what City departments do and how they do it. The City hopes that informed citizens are able to take information to community groups and share with neighbors. It may even encourage some to be involved in building a better community by becoming members of boards and commissions. To apply, log onto www.cityoffayetteville.org and click on the Citizens' Academy button at the top of the page or call (910) 433-1578. Community Development Holding Annual Action Plan Public Hearing The City's Community Development staff will hold a public hearing Thursday, March 7 at 7 p.m. in the City Hall Council Chamber, located at 433 Hay St., to review the information obtained from citizen participation meetings on needs and priorities for the 2013-2014 Annual Action Plan. Housing, economic development, community development and homelessness will be discussed. The City will receive Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds and HOME Investment Partnership (HOME) funds from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). When using CDBG funds, the project must meet one of the following broad national objectives: Provide decent housing and a suitable living environment or expand economic opportunities, primarily for low to moderate-income persons. HOME funds may be used to carry out multi-year housing strategies through acquisition, rehabilitation and new construction of rental housing and tenant based rental assistance. For more information, please contact the City's Community Development Department at (910) 433-1590. Sidewalks Being Constructed with Minimal City Funds As the City of Fayetteville continues to work at improving vehicle and pedestrian safety with the Grove Street/Eastern Boulevard Safety Project, Raeford Road Corridor Study, Bragg Boulevard Corridor Study, the completed Ramsey Street construction project and more Transit benches and shelters, the Engineering & Infrastructure Department is working with contractors to construct more sidewalks leveraging minimal City funds. As many roads and thoroughfares, including Ramsey Street, Cliffdale Road and Bragg Boulevard, have seen more construction in recent years, Hoke Loop Road and Murchison Road are the recent recipients of more sidewalks.
