As a part of the NCAA Division III Special Olympics Initiative, the USA South Conference selected Special Olympics Cumberland County basketball teams to participate in the USA South Conference Championships at the Crown Coliseum in February. Gilmore Therapeutic Recreation Center, which is ran by FayettevilleCumberland Parks & Recreation, works with Special Olympics Cumberland County. Each month, you can also make a connection with PWC, Fayetteville's Hometown Utility, through Your PWC Connections. Your PWC Connections airs Tuesday at 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Carolina 60 and the second and fourth Tuesday at 8 p.m. on Time Warner Cable Channel 7. Cumberland County athletes assisted in presenting awards to collegiate athletes in the USA South Conference at the men's and women's banquets at the Crown Coliseum. The purpose of this partnership is to improve the lives of Special Olympics athletes through their involvement with Division III student-athletes and to foster a mutual learning experience between Division III studentathletes and Special Olympics athletes. The activities pursued by student-athletes will vary in each state and region, tailored to best utilize the student-athletes' time and local resources. Service activities with Special Olympic athletes could range from sports clinics to bowling, pizza parties or fundraising efforts.
