A Collaboration of Community by BILL BOWMAN From a community and business point of view, one of the most anticipated events of the year is the annual Chamber of Commerce Awards Dinner. It was held last Friday at the Embassy Suites and attended by hundreds of the most distinguished people, businesses and organizations in the county. It is here where local business, military and local governments come together to honor and recognize those in our community who have, in one way or another, left their mark and distinguished themselves in the eyes of our community. The Athena Award, Realtor Cup, Outstanding Volunteer, Young Professional of the Year and Trailblazer Award in their own way define the traits, priorities and characteristics that define our community. To all the 2012 award winners, congratulations for your achievements and a job well done. I also want to personally congratulate Realtor Cup and Outstanding Business of the Year recipient Mike Lallier, of Reed-Lallier Chevrolet, for his noteworthy and outstanding contributions to the civic, industrial and cultural growth of our community. I can't think of anyone who has defined or demonstrated such an immense commitment to service and excellence. My company, Kidsville News, Inc. and Darrell Handelsman of Fayetteville SwampDog fame were both honored to be recognized as nominees for of the Business of the Year. Just seeing our image projected up on the big screen in front of several hundred people was a thrill as well as an honored privilege. You see, few people are as blessed as I am because each day I go to work at Kidsville News! doing something I absolutely love for no other reason than I love it. Had we have won the Business of the Year award, I would have been able to share with everyone the real reasons we have been successful and it has nothing to do with me. I would have told everyone that our success comes from having a great staff and leadership team under the direction of my friend and Associate Publisher Janice Burton. A remarkable woman, Janice's dedication, commitment to education, her family and this community make creating a product that serves millions of children, teachers and parents every month almost second nature to her. Her free spirit, goodwill and work ethic is contagious and can be seen in everyone involved in the creation and implementation of the Kidsville News! literacy and education initiative. She is the driving force, but she is not alone. She is joined by Associate Editor Stephanie Crider, also a military spouse, who has embraced the idea of Kidsville News! and is making it better than it has ever been before. Here is something else I would have told everyone: The concept and creation of Kidsville News! along with its success and influence in educational communities nationwide is actually the result of this community's effort and many of the people, companies and Fayetteville's Weather Forecast Thursday February 14 Friday February 15 4 High 61° Low 37° Sunny Sunday February 17 Saturday February 16 UCW FEBRUARY 13-19, 2013 High 59° Low 40° Partly Cloudy organizations responsible were present and in the room Friday night. Without their insights, help and support in the early days, Kidsville News! could not have been created. Cumberland County Schools involvement under the initial leadership of Dr. William Harrison (1998) and now Dr. Frank Till are the reason 90 percent of our publications nationwide are accepted, distributed and used throughout school systems. Our hometown utility, PWC, under the leadership of Stephen Blanchard and Carolyn Hinson developed the concept to create a monthly curriculum for the education of children, teachers and parents based on the safety, conservation and value of clean water and electricity. This concept is the reason 15 percent of Kidsville News! supporters nationally are utility companies and electrical coops. Jean Stultz, CEO of Bragg Mutual Federal Credit Union, was the model for 19 percent of Kidsville News! sponsors being financial institutions advocating financial literacy. Susan Daniels, executive director of Fayetteville's Fascinate-U served as the model for science centers and children's museums now representing 11 percent of Kidsville News! sponsors nationally. Last, but surely not least, Dr. Larry Keen of FTCC and Dr. Ben Hancock of Methodist University both realize the importance of developing literacy and education in young children. They also realize that institutions of higher education serve in the long-term motivation and development of the adult as well as the child. Again, across the country 11 percent of the sponsors for Kidsville News! are colleges and universities. I guess my point here has been to provide you "full disclosure" that it was not just me that developed Kidsville News! into the valuable reading and educational initiative it is today. It is, and continues to be a collaboration of the people, businesses and organizations I mentioned above — all local, all dedicated and all striving to make Fayetteville and Cumberland County a great place to live, work and raise a family. So, you now can see why I am the lucky one. I get to travel around the country telling our local story and make no mistake about, Kidsville News! is now and, will continue to be, the fastest growing children's literacy and education publication in the country. Every time it is introduced into a community it is implemented just like it was created here in Fayetteville and Cumberland County. It doesn't work any other way. I am extremely proud of Kidsville News!, this community and the honor the Chamber bestowed on us. I want to reiterate that I love what I do, but, it is my dedicated and talented staff and the community itself that makes it all possible and worthwhile.
