2A Daily News ��� Wednesday, January 30, 2013 Community people&events CHP blood drive The California Highway Patrol Cottonwood Inspection Facility will be partnering with BloodSource on Friday, Feb. 15, for a blood drive. The BloodSource bus will be parked from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the scale facility on northbound Interstate 5. Donors are encouraged to call Officer Erin Giglio or Bronla Waltman at 347-1813 to reserve an appointment time. BloodSource will provide snacks and juice to all donors who will also receive points that can be redeemed for movie tickets and other items from the website. Donors will also receive a cup of homemade soup provided by the scales. This is a wonderful opportunity for the public and law enforcement to join together in donating blood, which will remain in the Northstate. Officers will be on hand to answer any questions donors have regarding recruitment, child safety seats and traffic laws. Young Marines to gather Young Marine units from Northern, Central and Southern California will form up in Sacramento at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 2, for a Red Ribbon Week encore performance on the steps of the Capitol Building. This encore performance will be video taped and photographed for NIDA (the National Institute of Drug Addiction) for National Drug Facts Week. The Ray Jacobs (1st) Battalion is the only entity in the national Young Marine program (of more than 300 units) to be involved with NIDA. The Young Marines and volunteer Registered Adult Leaders in Northern, Central and Southern California are rocking all of California and our Nation in the war on drugs. These Young Marines "lead all other youth" in these efforts and they set the example by "leading a healthy, drug free lifestyle." Overlap opposite sides of tortilla; secure with 1 or 2 wooden toothpicks. Fry 2 or 3 flautas at a time in oil heated to 350-375 degrees about 30 seconds on each side. Tortilla should be golden and crisp. Remove flautas with tongs, tipping to each side to drain excess oil. Keep warm in very slow oven (250 degrees) while frying. Arrange flautas on platter and spoon warm Avocado Sauce over top; garnish with spoonfuls of sour cream, avocado slices and ripe olives. Enter your favorite beef and avocado recipe in the 2013 NBCO, www/beefcookoff.org. 2 pound boneless beef chuck roast 2 packages taco seasoning mix 1 cup water 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar 2 cups vegetable oil for frying 15 to 20 corn tortillas, 6 inches in diameter Avocado sauce* Sour cream 1 avocado, sliced Ripe olives, pitted Trim excess fat from roast; cut into 4 or 5 pieces and place in 4 quart pot. Sprinkle taco seasoning mix over meat; add water and vinegar. Cover and cook slowly approximately 2 hours or until meat is tender. Turn meat 4 or 5 times during cooking. Remove meat from cooking liquid; cool. Reserve cooking liquid. When cool enough to handle, shred meat. Return to cooking liquid and cook, uncovered slowly 10 to 15 minutes while preparing Avocado Sauce and heating oil for frying. Remove meat from sauce with slotted spoon. Avocado Sauce 1 1/2 beef bouillon cubes 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder 1 1/2 cups hot water 3 to 4 tablespoons flour 2 avocados, pureed in blender Dissolve bouillon cubes and garlic powder in water; mix in flour. Use 4 tablespoons flour if thicker sauce is desired. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until thickened. Keep warm while frying flautas. After flautas are arranged on platter; stir pureed avocado into warm sauce. Do not cook avocado with sauce as flavor and color may change. 15 to 20 flautas.
