p. 3 SIGMA PHI EPSILON C oming into the school year, it was our goal as a Chapter to recruit 30 strong men into our Fraternity. Due to multiple factors including facility renovations, commitment from brothers, and a hungry recruitment committee, we succeeded, signing 31 new members. The new class is full of rising leaders from throughout the country, and we are excited to see what these young men will bring to the Chapter. This year, we held our Balanced Man Scholarship banquet on September 22. With an extremely large pool of highly qualified applicants, the decision on a winner was tough. Through the generous endowment created by Gene Brewer '34, we are able to award three scholarships to highly deserving incoming freshmen. The scholarship is used to reward high school seniors for their outstanding achievements, as well as give them insight into the values of SigEp and a look into our brotherhood. The Chapter signed several of the scholarship finalists as part of our recruitment goals, and we look forward to growing and expanding the scholarship in the future. Over the summer, the AVC coordinated a demolition and renovation project of all three bathroom facilities in the Chapter House. Adding new lighting, sinks, stalls, and shower amenities has made the Chapter House a much more attractive living environment. Apart from bathroom renovations, the new live-in group continued the outdoor renovations from last spring and re-painted the skull logo on the patio. In addition, we removed the seldom-used bike cage and converted the space to a more enjoyable area. Last spring, the Chapter followed the recommendation of the Grand Chapter Conclave legislation and passed a bylaw declaring that common spaces are to remain free of alcohol. This policy change has been observed and acknowledged by the members living in the house, resulting in a much more clean, organized, and respectable facility. Moving forward, the Chapter facilities will remain at this higher standard. This change has already positively impacted the Chapter and will continue to do so for years to come. Academically, we finished fifth of 18 in the grade report among the other fraternities on campus with a 3.02 GPA. This average is higher than both the all-fraternity and the all-campus men's averages. When the men are not studying, they are most likely spending time outside and enjoying the fall weather before the start of the rainy season. Finally, we would like to thank all the dedicated alumni who volunteer their time to the Chapter. Their leadership and commitment are having an extremely positive impact on the Chapter and providing the necessary support and encouragement to reach our goal of becoming the best Fraternity at the University of Oregon.
