ΣΦΕ EARTBEA H T UNIVERSITY OF OREGON s SIGMA PHI EPSILON Oregon Beta FALL 2018 SUMMER HOUSE RENOVATIONS SUCCESSFUL Get Involved with the Alumni Volunteer Corporation! I t has already been a little over a year since the renewed Oregon Beta Alumni and Volunteer Corporation (AVC) came together to mentor the Chapter and manage the two properties: the main Chapter House and the apartment we knew as "1010." It has been great working together with this team (Jeff Nolz, South Dakota State '03, Brian Bell '06, Brian Stewart '82, Jack Moothart '88, Mark McGonegal '88, Mark Boersma '87, Dick Allen '58, Pat Latimer '68, Craig Hodgson '83, Dan Stalie '87, and Ryan Wheatley '07); many thanks to them for selflessly volunteering their time and talents for the overall betterment of the OR Beta Chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon. We believe our efforts are making a difference, and we try to have some fun along the way! One of the first priorities of the rejuvenated AVC, was to improve the overall quality and livability of our 1000 Alder Street Chapter House. Over the summer, we made a significant investment in order to make a number of cosmetic and structural renovations to the house. We painted of all of the doors, cleaned all the carpets and floors, and also recently replaced the boiler. Most notably, all of the bathrooms in the house underwent a major makeover. Much of this could not have been accomplished without the efforts of Dan Stalie, who coordinated the work with Meili Construction. We also need to thank Brian Bell for orchestrating the finances needed to accomplish all these projects. As you probably know, we now partner with SigEp National Housing, and together, we have plans to continually make upgrades to the house, while still maintaining the cash flow needed for both Chapter and AVC operations. Another goal of the AVC is to build stronger alumni relations, especially across the many generations of Oregon Beta SigEps. During the weekend of the Oregon-Stanford football game, Brian Stewart and Jack Moothart '88 organized a series of gatherings and socials for Oregon Beta alumni in Eugene. The weekend kicked off with a social at one of Eugene's local establishments, where dozens of SigEp alums from classes of 1962 to 2017 gathered to reminisce about their undergraduate days on the U of O campus. On Saturday morning, coffee and other refreshments were available at the Chapter House, and alumni were invited to tour the facility. Come game time, Mark McGonegal and I used our tailgate spots to host alumni. The following morning, the undergraduate Chapter organized and executed another successful Balanced Man Scholarship banquet, with a number of alumni also in attendance. We were fortunate that brother Stu Redsun '87 was in town for the football game to serve as the keynote speaker for the banquet. Overall, it really was a great weekend to be a SigEp. Please follow the OR Beta SigEp Alumni Facebook page for more information about alumni gatherings in both the Eugene and Portland areas. We are always looking for alumni volunteers to share their time and talents, whether this is as part of the board or simply volunteering to serve as a mentor or speaker at a Chapter event. Jack Moothart is developing a "career focus" series, in which alumni can talk about their career field and suggestions on how to connect and get interviews—let us know if you could do so for your field. As a reminder, the Oregon Beta AVC meets in both Portland and Eugene, about three times a year at each location. If you are looking to attend an AVC meeting or volunteer at either the local, regional, or national level, please contact me or Jeff Nolz (nolz@ohsu.edu). Fraternally, Todd Ruberg '82 AVC President Stu Redsun '87 delivers the keynote address at the Balanced Man Scholarship banquet this fall.
