I do not like to differ with my friends at the Board of Supervisors, but I do not believe that hiring a County Counsel is the answer to their problems. I am of the opinion that the reason for hiring Mr. Frazier is not so much as a lack of ability or time by Mr. Hedlund, our District Attorney, as it is the result of a growing feud between the Supervisors and the District Attorney's office; the feud helped along by one of our newspapers. If, as stated, there is too much for the District Attorney to do, why not hire another lawyer to help him? If there is a question as to his decisions, why not check with the State Attorney General's office? The cost of the appointment of a County Counsel will of course run to a lot more than the salary of $7,200 per year. There could soon be a need for an assistant, a stenographer, office rent and supplies. Such departments, once started, cost progressively more each year. I think of the County as a large corporation handling millions of dollars each year. Most corporations either retain a firm of lawyers or have their own legal departments, but would not hire two sets of lawyers with two different opinions. Eight years ago, Mr. Frazier unsuccessfully ran for the office of District Attorney. He asked to be elected to the full time job with a salary of $4,200.00 per year. Now the County is proposing to pay him twice as much for a part time job. *** Five year old granddaughter Melody tells me that Santa brought her a set of breakable dishes…which is probably correct. *** When psychiatrists check over a neurotic person, they often decide that their trouble started in their childhood. Either it was an unhappy childhood or one in which the father and mother quarreled in the child's presence. And from this handicap the child grows up perverted, a criminal or just plain crazy. I've never thought much of this theory. Occasionally my mother and father argued in my presence but they got over it quickly even though they engaged in some good arguments. And I am glad they did, otherwise, how would I have known what to expect when I was married and started arguments of my own? With all the courses they have today in high school and college, it might be a good idea to have one titled, "How to Win Home Arguments". *** (An advertisement on the back of the above column would be of interest to real estate people today) "$6,500.00 is the full price with only $500.00 down!
