4A – Daily News – Wednesday, May 12, 2010 Commerce business As a new Chamber of Commerce director and co- director of Local Govern- ment Services Committee, I have been enrolled in a crash course on the municipal process and leaders of Tehama County. Since my appointment, I have not had much time to evaluate my progress or that of my peers on the board. I didn’t set aside the time for a performance review of my initial role as a director before I was politely asked to join the rotation of writers for the weekly cham- ber column. I guess it has something to do with fresh blood and the chamber. I am happy to do my part. My first task as co-direc- tor was to meet my future predecessor and mentor, Bill Moule. The first thing he said to me was “I hope you like to read.” I had no idea how relevant the statement would become. It took a few seconds to realize that his knowledge and experience could not quickly be down- loaded on my external hard drive for future reference. Thirty-one years of civil service and plenty more as a business owner is far too much information for any technological gizmo that me and my generation rely so heavily upon. No, Mr. Moule marches to a different beat. He likes to pound foot- steps on the pavement, speak to people face-to-face, com- mit economic development reports to memory and pro- vide numerous examples of actual experiences from his hard drive in his memory. To replace Mr. Moule, if possible, will take my life- time and until he no longer wishes to serve our commu- nity I will remain the ever- lasting sponge of philan- thropy and politics standing by his side. If only he’d use a computer. My next task involved submers- ing myself into the cloudy vat of feder- al, state and local politics that sur- round the Sacramen- to River Bend Recreation Area and its proposed desig- nation as a National Recre- ation Area within the National Landscape Conser- vation System. Not a tongue twister but certainly a mouthful. To prepare for this issue, I read the 2007 legislation from both the House and the Senate, hundreds of resi- dents’ letters of opposition and approval, countless related articles and publica- tions, several relevant web- sites and too many other resources to mention here. I spoke with many Tehama County residents and elected officials and visited the Bend Recreation Area with BLM management. I searched for familiar properties with similar des- ignations and studied the process and the outcomes of the designation. Then I determined the impact and evaluated the benefit as it relates to our community and my responsibility as co- director of governance. The primary responsibili- ty of the chamber of com- merce is to promote the eco- nomic well being of our community. This can be achieved by facilitating the & growth of existing business- es and establishing new ones. One method of achiev- ing those goals is to promote and attract tourism. The Strategic Marketing Plan and Tehama County Eco- nomic Demographic Profile reports both highlight the importance of the Sacramen- to River Bend Recreation Area and its designation as a National Recreation Area in the effort to create recre- ational opportunities and attract tourism. The Sacramento River Bend Recreation Area is an amazing natural resource in our backyard that has the opportunity to become unique as the first National Recreation Area funded by the National Landscape Con- servation System. Based on these reports and our com- plete and thorough review of this issue, the chamber of commerce encouraged the Tehama County Board of Supervisors to pursue the National Recreation Area designation during the May 4 board meeting. The supervi- sors’ final vote was 3-2 in favor of further pursuing the designation. I and my fellow chamber directors and executive com- mittee members support this designation. We stand behind this as we feel it is good for our community and our families. I hope you will offer your favorable consid- eration in regards to this wonderful resource. This is good for Red Bluff. Matt Byrne is co-director of the Local Government Services Committee for the Red Bluff-Tehama County Chamber of Commerce. enterprise Chamber backs Bend designation Thanks to sponsors • Thanks to our sponsors – The May Madness Car Show was a roaring success and the chamber is so grateful to those who sponsored this event and made this year’s car show possible. Thanks to Doug Hatley and Katie Linnet for co-chairing the event and all the committee members who did an out- standing job. We owe a debt of gratitude to Eric Hammond of All Star Recycling who joined the car show committee this year and contributed immensely to the show with his fresh ideas and follow- through to make them happen. The Cube Car was provided by All Star and also the cars for the Car Smash. He brought in the Thunder and Z- Rock DJs to compete at the Burn Outs with cars he provided and also loaned the much needed equipment for unloading K-rails for the Burn Outs. So thank you, Eric Ham- mond from All Star Auto Recycling for all that you contributed to this year’s car show. Congratulations to all the winners who showed their cars on Saturday, and also the Burn Out, Hydraulic Show and Motorcycle Slow Race winners.
