For the second straight day the Lady Spartans beat this Bobcats — this time 6-2, behind sharp defense and contributions from throughout the line- up. On Tuesday, Emily McEnaney picked up four hits and Haley Harris homered in a 10-3 Spar- tans win, but Paradise pitcher Jessica Salsbury was able to silence the Red Bluff bats through the first three innings on Wednesday. Kaitlyen Porter then homered to center field in the fourth inning to give Paradise a 1-0 lead. The Spartans would bounce right back. Brittany Fletcher opened up the Red Bluff half of the fourth with a walk. Bryce Etzler then had one of her two singles on the day followed by a Krista Rodriguez bunt sin- gle to load up the bases. Jerilynn Purcell hit a rocket to the Paradise shortstop, who was able to force the first out at home. Two batters later McE- naney drew a walk to force in another run. Red Bluff scored a third run after Paradise tried unsuccessfully to turn a fielder’s choice off a ball hit by Megan McColpin. The dagger then came when Harris hit a ball to the a diving centerfielder, that was initially call, but trickled out of her glove as she hit the run. Two more Red Bluff runs came in to score on the play and the Spartans had a 5-1 lead. That was plenty for Etzler, who pitched the complete game and allowed just five hits. Although she’s a fresh- man, Etzler said she did- n’t let the third inning homer get to her. “You gotta’ get back up and pitch as hard as you can,” she said. Red Bluff also turned in a solid defensive effort behind her. Aubrie Lair made a diving catch and held on to the ball in the second inning. McEnaney and Harris turned a double play in the fifth inning and an alert Rodriguez was able to turn one from a liner to third in the sixth inning. “The defense was incredible. If I didn't have them I’d be in the pot,” Etzler said. Red Bluff tacked on an insurance run with a two- out rally in the sixth inning. Purcell reached on a single and took second base when the centerfield- er mishandled the ball. Matheson then stepped up and delivered her home with her second RBI sin- gle of the day. “I’m doing what I like to do,” Matheson said of her increased playing time and ability to deliver in the clutch. The junior said she enjoys the pressure of coming up to bat with run- ners in scoring position. “It makes me hit bet- ter,” Matheson said. Red Bluff improved to 23-7 overall and 9-1 in the Eastern Athletic League with the win. The victory also knocked Paradise out of the EAL title hunt as it gave them five league losses. The Lady Spartans host Shasta, today, at 4 p.m. Another strong showing for Gold Diggers Spartans fall to PV in 10 The Red Bluff baseball team rallied from down three runs in the seventh inning to force extra frames, but fell 7- 6 to Pleasant Valley, Tuesday, in a game with the Eastern Athletic League title at stake. Scott Avery pitched five strong innings for Red Bluff and Trevor Gip- son pitched five relief innings, but Red Bluff was undone by a couple of defensive errors with two outs in the 10th inning. Derek Jones, Austin Brownfield, Cody Gappa and EJ Stanton each had two hits in the loss. “Our guys played well,” coach Joe Gallaty said. Mathueses, Ruiz make all-league Three Lois Molinos Bulldogs made the Mid-Valley All-League golf team. Zach Mathues averaged an 85.2 on the season to have the second best scor- ing average in the MVL. Wills Mathues averaged 94.7 and Andrew Ruiz averaged a 110. Esparto’s Matt Muller led the MVL with a 74.2 average. They were joined on the team by James “AK” Kim and Mike Parker of Esparto. Eduardo Velasquez, Carlos San- davol and John Solis of Williams and Biggs golfer Ryan Van Gilder. Los Molinos won the MVL with Esparto taking second place, Williams in third and Biggs in fourth. Tehama Tracker Spartans tennis Red Bluff closed out their regular season with a 9-0 sweep of Paradise. With just one senior, the 7-7 record complied this season is encouraging for the upcoming years. No. 1 Cody Yarbrough had the toughest match of the day, but prevailed 5-7, 6-4, 6-4. Kyle Davis won 6-1, 6-1. Paul Hendricks picked up a 6- 2, 6-1 win. C.J. Varner went 6-0, 6-1. Aaron Vasey won 6-1, 6-1 and Wyatt Dodero won 6-0, 6-1 Davis and Dodero won No. 1 doubles 10-6. Hendricks and Varner won their doubles match 10-4 and Davis Palubeski and Austin Chase won their doubles match 10-0. Spartans soccer Nikki Stone scored a first half goal Tuesday and Paradise topped the Lady Spartans 1-0. Cardinals softball Central Valley beat Corning 6-4, Tuesday. Anna Curry had a triple and drove in a run. Lizeth Wilfong doubled twice and drove in a run. Karlie Jennings had a double and an RBI. Vada Bree Sutfin singled and doubled. Los Molinos baseball and softball The Lady Bulldogs beat Biggs 8-7, Tuesday, to even their league record at 4-4. The boys baseball team fell 6-5 to Biggs despite a fifth inning rally to gain the lead. Warriors baseball Mercy improved to 5-0 in the Tri-Cities League, with a 15-8 win over Liberty Christian on Tuesday. Red Bluff Little League Junior-Senior Sign-ups this Sunday at 10:30 a.m. Sign-ups for the junior -senior divisions of baseball and softball will take place at 10:30 a.m., Sunday at Berrendos School The Daily News erroneously reported the sign-ups as Saturday in Wednesday’s edition and apologizes the mistake. Sun Oaks Aquatics Sign-ups If you’re interested in joining a competitive and fun swim team this summer the Sun Oaks Aquatics Racing Swim Team will be holding sign-ups Saturday at Star- bucks Coffee on Adobe Road. Cost to swim for the summer is $150, which includes USASwimming registration. Scott Teeters, former Division I swim coach, will be the coach in Red Bluff for the summer. The weekend before the Gold Diggers placed third in a tournament in Sacramento.
