8A – Daily News – Thursday, May 6, 2010 Police have video of car bomb suspect NEW YORK (AP) — New York City police say they have surveillance video of the Times Square car bomb suspect walking down an alley moments after witnesses saw a smoking SUV parked there. A law enforcement official says the 30-year- old Faisal Shahzad (FY’- sul shah-ZAHD’) walks away wearing a white baseball cap moments after the Nissan Pathfind- er is ditched in a no- standing zone across from a Broadway theater. The official spoke Wednesday to The Asso- ciated Press on condition of anonymity because the investigation was ongo- ing. The SUV was rigged with a homemade gaso- line-and-propane bomb that didn’t go off on Sat- urday night. It still cleared the streets of thousands of tourists and shut down Times Square for several hours. Shahzad was arrested Monday night at Kennedy Airport and faces terror- ism and weapons charges. Suspect on no-fly list WASHINGTON (AP) — Law enforcement offi- cials decided not to call all airlines directly on Monday to tell them an important name had been added to the govern- ment’s ‘‘no-fly’’ list, even as investigators pursued the man they suspected was the Times Square bomber. Emirates airlines apparently didn’t notice the addition to the list, and Faisal Shahzad boarded a Mideast-bound jetliner before federal authorities pulled him off and arrested him. On Wednesday, the govern- ment issued a new requirement for airlines to check the no-fly list more often, a move aimed at closing that security gap in future cases of terror suspects. But officials could have called all the airlines themselves in such a criti- WORLD BRIEFING Gulf of Mexico. cal situation — they’ve done it before. This would have put Shahzad on the radar of the carriers, and it could have prevented him from being able to board the Emirates plane headed for Dubai. The FBI asked the Transportation Security Administration not to make the calls, according to an administration offi- cial who spoke on condi- tion of anonymity in order to discuss the ongoing investigation. The FBI did let the Transportation Safety Administration call a few domestic air carriers, which did not include Emirates. Box to bottle up oil will head to spill PORT FOURCHON, La. (AP) — A 12-man crew was making final preparations Wednesday to take a 100-ton contrap- tion 50 miles off the Louisiana coast in an unprecedented attempt to help funnel out oil spew- ing from the bottom of the St. Elizabeth Community Hospital A member of CHW Celebrating National Nurses Week NURSES: Making a difference every day St. Elizabeth honors the dedicated nurses and nurses aids. BP PLC chief operat- ing office Doug Suttles said it would take about two days to put it precise- ly on the seafloor. ‘‘This hasn’t been done before, it’s very complex and it will likely have challenges along the way,’’ Suttles said. The pipes and tubing were to be hooked to a ship over the weekend, and if successful, the oil would eventually be brought to shore. The boat, a 280-foot vessel named the Joe Griffin, was expected to start its 100-mile trip around the Mississippi Delta later Wednesday. Liberal Dem to retire WASHINGTON (AP) — Rep. David Obey, a leading liberal Democrat and chairman of the pow- erful House Appropria- tions Committee, said Wednesday that he will retire at the end of his term this year, dealing Democrats defending their majority another blow in an election season of voter discontent. ‘‘There is a time to stay and a time to go,’’ the Wisconsin lawmaker told reporters. ‘‘And this is my time to go.’’ Obey won the first of 21 terms in 1969 — when a special election was held after President Richard Nixon tapped Melvin Laird to be his defense secretary. He faced a potentially bruising re-election campaign this fall, and his retirement is likely to make it easier for Republicans to pick up his seat. Obey, 71, among a handful of veteran House Democrats who had been bracing for competitive races this fall, has routine- ly won re-election. In 2008 he did so with 61 percent of the vote. But voters this year are sour- ing on Washington. ‘‘I believe the job of a good politician was to be used up fighting on behalf of causes you believed in, and when you are used up, to step aside and let someone else carry on the battle. Well, today I feel used up,’’ he said. CLOSEOUT SALE 50% off all Seiko Watches Sale prices continue until all are sold. All sales final. & Seiko Clocks Corning Calif. Samuel ‘‘Joe’’ Wurzelbacher, who was hailed by Republican John McCain’s presi- dential campaign in 2008, won one of nearly 400 seats on the local Republican Party com- mittee in Ohio’s Lucas County. But don’t call him Joe the Politician just yet. The group he’ll serve on meets only a few times a year to elect the county chairman and sets the party agenda. Wurzelbacher won the seat by a 38-24 vote Tuesday in his suburban Toledo precinct. A mes- sage seeking comment was left with him Wednesday. He became an overnight sensation almost two years ago after questioning then- Sen. Barack Obama on the campaign trail about his economic policies and then when McCain repeatedly cited ‘‘Joe the Plumber’’ in a debate. He was held up by the GOP as an example of the middle-class worker who would be hurt eco- nomically by an Obama presidency. 2550 Sister Mary Columba Drive Red Bluff, CA 96080 530.529.8000 redbluff.mercy.org 1 DAY MEAT BONANZA May 8, 2010 8:00 am-5:00 pm Beef CONCERT United States Air Force Golden West Winds Quintet FREE Saturday, MAY 15, 2010 7:30 PM State Theatre, 333 Oak Street, Red Bluff Liberty For All Sponsored by: D NEWSAILY RED BLUFF TEHAMACOUNTY STATE THEATRE FOR THE ARTS Tri-Tips (In the Bag) Petite Sirloins (In the Bag) Whole Boneless Pork Loins You’ll save a bundle of cash at this exciting event.
