NEW! Heroes come in all shapes, sizes, and backgrounds; for me, Cadet Chloe Patterson, John D. Borrero is one of these heroes. Major Borrero was a guest speaker at the Shelby Com- posite Squadron Civil Air Pa- trol this past month. Born in New York City, he is a second generation Puerto Rican born in the Contiguous United States. At the age of 17, he enlisted in the military, was selected to attend the Naval Academy Prep School, and later the United States Naval Academy, where he received a Bachelors of Science in Oceanography. Though he enlisted in the Navy, he pur- sued a career in the United States Marines. Major Borrero shared some experiences of his military career which consisted of de- ployments to Iraq, the second attack of Fallujah, and transi- tion of governance back to Iraq. His military assignments included 1st Tank Battalion, 3d Light Armored Reconnais- sance Battalion, serving as a Platoon Commander and a Adjutant, providing support within the Operations shop and functioning a LAV25 ve- hicle. While Captain Borrero was deployed in Iraq as a linguist manager, his family began. Today, now a Major, Borrero is the proud father of three children and continues his service with the Marine Corp Reserve. Major Borrero also shared with the Cadets stories of his most recent mobilization to support Hurricane Relief efforts in Puerto Rico after Hurricane Irma and Maria im- pacted the island. He shared with us how Honor, Integrity, and making good choices are important, even when no one is watching. Major Bor- rero is a good example of a hero because he sacrifi ces leaving his family and friends behind to help others in need. When talking with him he said he just does his part, but when I was listening to him, I couldn't help but be amazed at how courageous and in- spiring Major Borrero is. We thank him for his service and taking the time to come out to speak to us. If you would like to learn more about the Civil Air Pa- trol Program visit www.go- civilairpatrol.com Written by C/M Sgt.
