The FPD has investigated instances in the past of individuals who located what was considered a great deal through an internet sales website and upon meeting the seller, the citizen was robbed or defrauded, to include counterfeit money being used to complete a purchase. There are a number of enticing deals posted on internet sales websites; however a suspect(s) may only be concerned of how they can separate you from your money without exchanging any property or by defrauding you with counterfeit money or products. The FPD would like to offer a few tips to decrease the likelihood of citizens becoming a victim of a crime while conducting the face to face transaction. • Never meet in a secluded location that is not populated or well lit. • If the deal seems too good to be true; be alert to a possible scam. • Consider arranging to meet during the daytime in a well populated area. • Arrange to meet at a public building. • Be alert of your surroundings when you arrive to meet the seller. • Do not agree to meet the seller alone. • Be alert of the possibility of receiving counterfeit currency: • The money doesn't feel like real currency • The money is printed on glossy paper or copy paper • The images are not as crisp or sharp as real currency • The money does not have a watermark or security strip visible • Call 911 if you have any concerns or if you feel you have been the victim of a fraud. Louise Street Bridge Closed Immediately as Precautionary Measure Effective immediately, the City-maintained Louise Street Bridge will close as a precautionary measure after a regularly scheduled bi-annual inspection indicated the condition of the bridge had deteriorated faster than expected. City staff grew concerned about the safety of the bridge for vehicular traffic after meeting with bridge inspectors today to review their findings, and determined the most prudent course of action would be to close the bridge to vehicular traffic until it can be replaced. The bridge has been on the City's replacement list for several years and inspections of the bridge have been done at regular required intervals including after Hurricane Matthew last year. Those inspections have always deemed the bridge to be safe. The latest inspection, however, identified an unexpected level of deterioration that supports a finding that the bridge is no longer safe for vehicles. Pedestrians will still be able to safely cross the bridge, so students will still be able to walk to school as they normally do until the bridge is replaced. The City's Public Services Department is in the process of determining the next steps to take regarding the design and construction of the new bridge and more details will be released when possible. "We just wanted to ensure in the interest of the safety of our residents, that we immediately close the bridge," said City Manager Doug Hewett. "We will continue to work as quickly as possible to get this bridge replaced, but this is not a quick process. Our primary concern on the immediate front, however, is ensuring the safety of our residents, and closing this bridge is necessary in that regard."
