The weekend is looking rough for the beaches but for our area, only a few showers are possible Saturday with a cold front passing through, then partly sunny skies again. The big news will be a major Hurricane Sandy, possibly reaching at least Category 3 strength (which is major) and a series of events are shown on the weather models that sets the stage for a once in a lifetime event for the Midatlantic or Northeast states. Sandy could end up phasing with a deep trough over the Northeast which would combine the effects of a Hurricane with the effects of a strong baroclinic zone, meaning all types of wild weather could result. If the storm doesn't get nudged out to sea, it would lash New York and the Northeast with a major hurricane coming inland, and on the western side of the storm, heavy snows. A really strange setup, but it's happened before and could happen again. For us, if it did "phase" we would turn even colder early next week, with the coldest air of the season. There are so many now that drink from our feeders and the many fl owers we grow. I love watching the hummingbirds as they buzz and hover, bombard and harass each other around the feeders; each one jockeying for the best position on the feeder. But recently, there was one male who was determined to be the only bird to drink from the feeder. As other little birds buzzed up, he squawked and fl ew straight at them, chasing them away. And as he chased one, another bird came up from a different direction. And as he chased the second one off, a third one hovered nearby, until he was trying to chase away about a dozen different hummingbirds. Of course, he couldn't. Try as he did, there was always some bird drinking on his feeder, doing what he didn't get to do be- cause he was too busy fi ghting the others off. Are you too busy fi ghting others to enjoy life? There really is enough to go around. So relax, and make a positive life, not just a living today.
