TITLE THE E-MAIL STORY OR PICTURE "FOR SHOPPER" OR I WILL ASSUME IT'S JUNK MAIL AND NOT OPEN IT. Outdoor Truths By Gary Miller This was one of those mornings where it seemed the deer were everywhere. As soon as the dimmest light shone over the mountains, I had already located a small yearling doe feeding in the acorns beside my stand. Just a few minutes lat- er two older doe were fi ltering across the hill just out of range of my bow. By now my expectations for the day were on high alert. I couldn't have been more right. For nearly three hours I watched deer come and go without ever giving my location away. It was fun... except for the moment in the middle of this morning when I shot over the back of a deer. Missed her com- pletely. In fact, she would have had to have been about 18 inches taller for me just to nick her back. It was that bad. Of course I did what every good bow hunter should do; I blamed it on my bow. The sights must have been knocked off! The arrow must be crooked! The cams are not camming! The rest is not resting! The stabilizer is not stabilizing! And it was not until I checked all of those that I came to the introspection that it was me! Surely not me? Not the great white hunt- er? Not the guru of game? Not the boss of the bucks? Yes, it was me and it was This may sound funny to SEEING DEER someone who has never hunted deer, but one of the hardest things in deer hunting may be simply to see a deer that's there to be seen. Mature bucks are seldom caught standing in the open in broad daylight. Instead, learn to look into and through bushes instead of at them. Try to pick bits and pieces of a deer out of the bush. With your eyes and binoculars, look not for a deer but for something different; a shape, color, line, shadow, reflection, or mass that doesn't quite fit into the scene. The clue may be nothing more than a few inches of antler, a white horizontal belly, or the shiny blackness of an eye, and then all of a sudden the whole animal takes shape. I am unable to be the perfect hunter. This particular story however has thrilled me in reminding me about the uniqueness of Christianity. Do you real- ize that only Christianity meets the need for those who cannot live the perfect life? While all other religions ask its follow- ers to work their way to Heaven without the 100% assurance they will get there; Christianity assumes the inability of its followers to earn anything and instead offers a substitution, Jesus, who lived a perfect life and paid the price for those of us who could not earn Heaven on our own. And then if that is not enough, Christianity says that because the price was already paid by Jesus on the cross, we can be fully assured that our place in Heaven will be there when our time on earth is over. Now that, my friend, is a deal no one should pass up. www.outdoortruths.org HORSE QUALITY HAYHORSE QUALITY HAYPETS • LIVESTOCK Oat hay, fescue hay & bermuda hay. Sq bales, $4.
