NWA Democrat-Gazette Best of the Best 3 Sunday, October 29, 2017 By Sarah Haney NWA Democrat-Gazette C areer Academy of Hair Design has been providing superior services and offering training to promising stylists since the late 1960s. There are four locations in Northwest Arkansas including ones in Fayetteville, Springdale, Rogers, and Siloam Springs, as well as a more recent addition in Fort Smith. The customer base sets Career Academy apart from similar institutions in the area. "The clear distinction is the number of clients we serve," stated Career Academy of Hair Design President Jim Butenschoen. "We do between 4,000 and 5,000 services a month." With this volume of customers, students at Career Academy of Hair Design have the opportunity to learn the skills of the trade on actual people. The primary focus of Career Academy is to ensure that the students are completely "salon ready" when they graduate. One of the ways this is accomplished is with the large number of clients the students serve. Another is with many extremely experienced instructors who provide direction with clients. The results from this training are invaluable to students, making them highly sought after by local salons because they are truly ready to work and make money. "This is a whole educational experience for the students," noted Butenschoen. With a very small student to instructor ratio, the stylists at Career Academy of Hair Design receive a high quality training. Training and services offered to the public include hair cutting, styling and coloring, as well as manicures, skin care and cosmetics. A shampoo and cut (men's or women's) is priced at $7 and offered at all locations. Full-salon services are offered including facials, microderm abrasion, waxing and chemical peels. "We are also the state's only CHI partner school," added Butenschoen. "We offer a full line of CHI products such as fl at irons, shampoos, conditioners, and hair colors." Career Academy of Hair Design has been designated a model program by the state of Arkansas for its high school program. The program is offered to juniors and seniors and enables them to get licensed once they have fi nished high school. In addition to this distinction, Career Academy of Hair Design has also won Best of the Best four years and is nominated for the fi fth time this year. All fi ve locations are open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday.
