2A – Daily News – Friday, April 2, 2010 Community people&events Birth - Bickley From the Firehouse: Springtime safety By DAVE CARR Red Bluff Fire Department As springtime arrives we tend to get out more often and take up out- door activities and here are a few outdoor activity safety reminders. Courtesy photo Jenny Youngblood and Frank Bickley, Jr., of Red Bluff, a son, Frank “Cooper” Bickley, 7 pounds, 8 ounces, born Feb. 22, 2010, at St. Elizabeth Community Hospital in Red Bluff. Welcoming baby are big sister, Brittany Lusher, 16, and brothers,Austin Youngblood, 11, and Colton Youngblood, 10; grandparents Frank and Joanne Bickley, and Steve and Penny Jackson, all of Red Bluff, along with grandmother, Beverly Kingsley and great grandmother, Myra Haley both of Sacramento. SECRET WITNESS 529-1268 A program of Tehama County Neighborhood Watch Program, Inc. Setting it straight Thursday's story titled "Big bang" contained an error. Three sticks of dynamite were recovered from the Coleman property. The Daily News regrets the error. A story in Monday’s edition, “County looks into petroleum storage,” requires clarification. The story refers only to above-ground storage tanks. –––––––– It is the policy of the Daily News to correct as quickly as possible all errors in fact that have been published in the newspaper. If you feel a factual error has been made in a news story, call the news department at 527-2153. Bicycle safety: children 18 years of age and under are required to wear helmets at all times while riding their bicycles. If you ride your bicycle at night you must have a headlight pointing to the front and a reflective light to the rear. Only one person at a time on a bicycle and the bicycle should be mechanically sound. All bicycle riders adult or child must maintain the rules of the road the same as vehicles. No riding on the opposite side of the road. Bicycles are not allowed on the sidewalks and you should respect the right of way of pedestrians. ATV safety: when riding an ATV always wear a DOT approved helmet. Ride your ATV off-road only. It is acceptable to cross a roadway or paved street at a 90 degree angle to get to an off-road area. Children should not have pas- sengers. Adults may have passen- gers on an ATV approved for a passenger. It is illegal to operate an ATV while under the influence of alcohol or drugs (prescription or otherwise). Wear goggles or some form of eye protection. Wear long pants and/or appropriate riding attire. Ladder safety: if you are paint- ing or trimming trees and using ladders or are more than three feet off the ground, use a full body har- ness and be secured by a lanyard or rope at eye level. Many of our EMS calls are for people falling off roofs, ladders and scaf- folding. We have seen dozens of spinal injuries and head injuries due to this one activity. Rent scaffolding if nec- essary. Do not use compromised lad- ders. Bent beams and rungs are reason enough to invest in a new ladder and subsequently your safety. Most of this safety equipment can also be rented. Window safety: With spring comes the desire to leave win- dows and doors open. For upstairs apartments and houses “child- proof” all window openings. Do not push beds or chairs up against windows because children playing or standing on them can reach these openings and a window screen will not hold them in if they push on it or accidentally fall into the screen. Vegetation management and weed abatement: Mow in the morning hours and never on a red flag day (high winds, low humidi- ty, high temps). Be aware of dry, tall grass and the potential for your mower to strike rocks or metal and cause sparks. Make sure you have a spark arrestor on all mowing and trimming equipment. Burning regulations: Check with Air Quality Control before considering burning leaves. Air Quality Control sets days and times that you can burn. Call 530- 527-3717 and listen to the recording before burning. In the city limits you may only burn small piles of leaves in the con- crete portion of the gutter. There is no open burning of any kind in your back yard and burn barrels have been banned by the state of Cali- fornia circa January 2004. RBFD responses for March 25, through March 30, 2010: 24 emergency medical calls, 2 traffic collisions, 1 illegal burning call, 4 public service calls, 1 structure fire, 1 police assist, 1 other type fire, 2 other type inci- dents As always, I welcome public comment and concerns.
