There were the retro jerseys the Spartans wore, a first pitch delayed when it was realized umpires hadn’t been assigned after the game with Chico had been rescheduled and even weather that was anything but the usual sunshine. About the only constant, was another Red Bluff win. The Spartans won their fourth straight with a 6-1 win over Chico, behind a seven-strikeout quality out- ing from Gerald Baker on the mound to improve to 4-1 in the East- ern Athletic League and 13-3 over- all. Baker also capped a two-run first inning with an RBI double to drive in Cody Gappa as the Spartans once again pounced on their opponents for an early lead. Leadoff hitter Derek Jones took the first offering he saw and smashed it back up the middle for a single and two batters later was dri- ven home Gappa. Chico struck back for a run in the top of the second when Jason Peck hit an RBI groundout to drive home Steven Koehnen, who had started the inning by smashing a double to deep center. The Panthers were still threaten- ing with just one down and two run- ners on when Baker induced a 4-6-3 double play ball to get out of the inning. It was the closest the Panthers would get. “I got to hand it to them, they were backing me up the whole way,” Baker said of the effort his teammates gave in the field, Wednesday. Red Bluff extended their lead out to 4-1 with two more runs in their half of the second. Derek Jones scored when EJ Stanton hit a high chopper, Chico’s shortstop couldn’t handle. Stanton then scored himself on a head’s up play on another Panther miscue. Gappa had hit a routine grounder to the shortstop, but the throw to first was low and no one was there to Softball tournament The Kay Webb Memorial Softball Tour- nament will be held April 10-11 with all pro- ceeds going toward the renovation of Red Bluff’s McGlynn Pool The tournament is being sponsored by the Blues for the Pool Com- mittee. Stanton motored all the way to score from second base. The Panthers managed base run- ners throughout the game, but Baker only seemed to dig in more on the mound. Pac Moxon opened the third for Chico with a single, but Baker struck out the next two Panther hit- ters. Red Bluff catcher Austin Brownfield ended the inning by throwing out Moxon trying to steal second. Red Bluff tacked on another run in the third inning when Maison Etzler doubled and Scott Avery drove him in. Dante Garaventa scored the final Spartans run after doubling in the sixth inning. He was driven in three batters later on a groundout by Jones. The win gave the Spartans their third four-game win streak of the year. Red Bluff will have a chance to extend it to a season-best five games today when Shasta visits at 4 p.m. Stanton said he likes how the Spartans are playing. “We’re becoming more disci- plined as a team,” the Red Bluff shortstop said, adding the team is rarely missing signs and listening to Coach Joe Gallaty 24-7. Still, Gallaty has a list of areas where he believes the Spartans could still improve — baserunning, quality at bats and another aspect that might have shown up in the middle innings of Wednesday’s game. “Playing the game, not the oppo- nent,” Gallaty said, noting he’s start- ed to see a pattern of once his play- ers take an early lead they have been taking some innings off. While the bad habit hasn’t bit the Spartans yet, it could against anoth- er quality team — such as the one the Spartans face this afternoon. Note: Beginning with today’s game, the Spartans varsity team will play the remainder of its 2010 home games at 4 p.m. Berrendos claims basketball championship picked up their first league win of the season, Tuesday, with a 1-0 road victory at Enterprise. Barry to join anniversary celebration SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Barry Bonds is scheduled to return to AT&T Park in April when the San Francisco Giants honor the 10th anniversary of their 2000 NL West champi- onship team. The Giants announced Wednesday that Bonds is one of several players sched- uled to take part in a pregame ceremony on April 11. Bonds has made only a handful of public appear- ances in San Francisco since the Giants decided not to bring him back following the 2007 season. The ceremony is among the events to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the downtown waterfront ball- park. Bonds has provided many of the signature moments, including setting the season home record of 73 in 2001 and breaking Hank Aaron’s career record of 755 in 2007. Bonds finished with 762 homers.
