At the 9th Annual Spring Run make sure the plants’ soil stays moist, especially right before you plant. That way when you pull them out of the cells, the fine hair roots will not stick and be pulled off or damaged. Tough love, cut the stem back by half, this will encourage more branching, deeper roots and more blooms. If the plants are root- bound with almost no soil showing, tease the roots apart to stimulate them to grow outward. In containers, be sure to pre- moisten the potting mix so settling does not expose the roots when you water. After you plant, water gently. Spread up to two inches of mulch around your plants, careful not to cover up shorter ones. Hint! Do not fertilize at all when you first plant. After a couple of weeks, you should see new growth and its time to fertilize. Organic liquid fertiliz- ers attach themselves to soil parti- cles better than inorganic ones, use at the rate recommended on the package. They will stay in the soil longer and are available to the plants’ roots as needed. Water in the morning, foliage can burn when the sun heats fertilizer. A wet leaf at night encourages fungal diseases. By week four the roots will have doubled in size at this point and the plants are putting on a lot of growth, too. It is time to give them another dose of that organic fertiliz- er solution at full strength. After about six weeks, your plants are blooming and looking great above and below ground. Pinch out the growing tip on all the stems at this point. With all this feeding, they are going to grow rapidly. Buy a package of balanced water-soluble fertilizer, and use it at the recommended strength. Now that the plants are robust enough they can handle a big burst of fertil- izer, and if they are not already blooming like crazy, they will be. Eight weeks and beyond fertiliz- er every time you water with the same balanced liquid fertilizer. Do not use at full strength, this could burn you plants. Mix it at quarter strength in your watering can or hose-end sprayer. Water first, and then follow it up with the fertilizer solution. This will ensure that the fertilizer stays in the soil where the roots need it. By this time, your plants are huge and gorgeous, and if you keep doing this through fall, they will stay that way.
