INSIDE: Eta Chapter Bands Together 2 Chapter Eternal 2 Alumni Spotlights 3 Standard Bearer The Spring 2017 Eta Chapter of Sigma Chi at the University of Mississippi SIGMA CHI MAKES SIGNIFICANT STRIDES IN LEADERSHIP AND ACADEMICS W elcome to our spring 2017 edition of The Standard Bearer. As we enter spring and in short order, experience the graduation of a great class of Eta leaders, I can't help but feel a bit of pride for the men who have stepped up in the last year and taken Eta to a higher level. SCHOLARSHIP AND ACHIEVEMENT As Sam notes in his message on page 2, our chapter has made significant progress with our overall grades. This past fall, we worked our way to the second-highest GPA among fraternities and we congratulated 77 of our members for making the Chancellor's Honor Roll and Dean's Lists of their respective programs. Of this group, 14 achieved perfect grades. We are proud of this focus and must thank Wilson Hays '18 for leading our effort here. Austin Powell '17, our outgoing student body president and one of Eta's 2017 graduates, was a finalist for the Rhodes Scholarship. Over his short four years on the Ole Miss campus, Austin has demonstrated true student leadership and has taken on every challenge presented and performed wonderfully. Clay Wooley '17, our 2016 consul, was awarded the Chapter Balfour Award. Clay, along with Max Lopez '17, took on the challenges presented to us through Derby Days and helped find a new way forward for the chapter and our relationship with the university. We will miss their leadership, but are in secure hands with our new head table as we move forward. Consul Sam Fowlkes '18, Pro Consul Johny Hallow '18, and Annotator Conner Ball '18 have moved into their leadership roles smoothly and bring new discipline to the chapter. I also want to congratulate Jarrett Estes '18 and Collin Curtin '19, who have been elected as president and vice president of standards for the Interfraternity Council. For both men, this is a great achievement, but it also continues to place Eta in a leadership role on campus. We wish them both outstanding years in their positions. 160TH ANNIVERSARY This coming October, Eta will celebrate its 160th year at Ole Miss. What an achievement that has been made possible by many Eta men and their families! We all have a great deal to be proud of with this milestone. Please mark your calendars for October 13, the weekend of the Vanderbilt football game. We will have a celebration that weekend to commemorate this great achievement. We hope to see you there.
