FRI•SAT•SUN ADMISSION $ 1000PER CAR PG PG Carolina '- Alison Krauss R productions with J. Justin Harper You know, if you really want to fi ddle the old-time way, you've got to learn the dance. The contra-dances, hoedowns. It's all in the rhythm of the bow. The great North Carolina fi ddle player Tommy Jarrell said, 'If a feller can't bow, he'll never make a fi ddler. He might make a violin player, but he'll never make no fi d- dler. The Bow: A Breath of Life Think of some differences between the violin (and its siblings) and the guitar. Aside from the variety of size and shapes, the most common difference is that the violin in most often played with a bow. The unique sound of bowing enables the instrumen- talist to play phrases and melodies with human characteristics. Plucked stringed instruments were around long before the Tues. & Wed.Pool • Wii • Cornhole • Beer Pong FREE GAME NIGHTS Email: louiebar2@yahoo.com J. Justin Harper bow. Central Asia's ancient cultures, dating back possibly 1000 years and beyond, could have been the fi rst to use bows on stringed instruments. Even today, horsehair is sought from the coldest regions of Mongolia and northern Asia for its strong qualities, which allow a superior grip on the strings. In Classical Western music, the bow mimics the sound of the human voice. As the bow is pulled across the strings, the infl ections of tone can change to imitate the human breath, legato (smooth) phrasing, staccato (short) notes, and a variety of other sounds. North Carolina is well known for its contribution to the violin through its rich history in Old Time fi ddle music. Tommy Jarrell from Mt. Airy, NC (also home of Andy Griffi th) greatly affected and infl uenced genres like country and bluegrass with his unique approach to the violin and its bowing. Popularizing 'shuffl e' techniques, Tommy Jarrell innovated the sound of the 'fi ddle' by incorporating rhythms inspired by folk dances and hoedowns. Check out North Carolina legend, Tommy Jarrell, online at www.shelbyinfo.com/music to enjoy his bowing technique. HUGE YARD SALE, SAT, 9/8 7am until. 236 East Double Shoals Rd, Lawndale, 28090.
